Help Choosing a New Army - Post HERE

It never ceases to amaze me that, despite the copious amounts of information about each race from the GW website, the pics of entire miniature ranges, and the countless threads on the subject, people still can't decide which army to choose when starting WHFB.

This wouldn't be a problem if, every week, I didn't see the same thread time and time again:

Hi im new to FB (just come over from 40K) and im not sure which army to choose. I want one that is quite shooty, good combat and good magic. PLZ HELP!!!

    >.<

So, in an attempt to tidy up the FB Armies section of LO, I present this thread to you. If you're still feeling indecisive then feel free to post here, explaining your dilemma, and I'm sure the good members of LO will come to your aid. Alternatively, if some of you more experienced members of LO are feeling generous, you may wish to post information about certain armies which could help people make up their mind.

Any NEW threads posing this question will be locked and redirected here

this is a very good i dea and i guess that ill be the first to use it

So my delima is between lizardmen and wood elves. I already play DE and want a playstyle change(yes i know that WE are somewhat the same as DE in playsytle)

Ill also consider chaos slaanesh or tzennch if someone posts something inspiring lol
    so off to comparisons

    lizards
they have great magic and HtH, and decent models but sarus have subpar movement and their shooting isn't much to brag about(not counting sallys)

    WE
they have great movement very good shooting and scouts and decent HtH but have lame magic(apart from treesinging which is very cool) I also like their models especially waywacthers(I would try and inculde 5-7 of these guys in all of my games)

so any comment or suggestions I play Lizards most of the time along with Chaos, brets woodies, and my friend might pick up dwarves

Also what would be a good starting Army for these two armies(what to buy,not a list)
    thanks

People often say saurus have sub par movement, but they have m4. This is the average for an infantry block, so I don't think it's that much of an issue (at least it hasn't been for me)

Skink shooting can be surprisingly effective; 40 skinks all firing multiple poison shots is quite a sight.

I am, of course, biased towards the lizardmen, but I still think they are one of the most user friendly armies around. A block of 20 saurus with the BSB nearby is damn hard to break, even for enemy cavalry. They also have plenty of nasty tricks up their sleeve: Bane head + Rule of burning Iron is a fun one, then you've got the JSoD who can be a pain in the behind for anyone running chariots/warmachines/mages. Combine these with terradons and you can be on your opponents weak spots as early as turn two.

Great army, lots of fun to play

Can't speak so much for wood elves myself. But they also look like a great army (hey, name me a FB army that isn't great =P) the models look fantastic and really fit the 'fantasy' theme well IMO. Not to mention the fact they consistently do well in major tournaments.

There are others on this board more suited to give some sort of an overview for the woodies

yay, woodies are fun to play. the problem is if your friend picks up the 'stunties' (dwarves) you might have a little trouble as those bastards are pincushions

I'll be objective. go with the models you like. i don't know a lot about lizzies (cause i don't know anyone who plays them) but i have had a read of their army book as i was choosing between the same two armies at some point.

lets start with woodies: i will quote my GW guy "to play WE, you need tactics"

woodies have awesome archers which will soften even the toughest army up. then hit them with the forest. Waywatchers are a mixed bag, some WE players hate them, and some swear by them. They can pull of some magic if they roll well. there are some great moments playing WE

    to quote _toast_

"It was weird....yesturday i had a game against Ogres, and on my first turn i let loose my 30 glade guad shots at long range, i was able to kill one ogre at the end of it. Big deal? I caused 2 units of 6 bulls run off the table with a unit of 6 ironguts to joining in the panic and a butcher and his general to boot. It was hilarious. all that was left has a maneater and a unit of leadbelchers. I caused 20 out of 25 ogres to flee from one killed ogre"

they have awesome models, strong monsters and trees that fight people (hell even the terrain fights for WE) i agree that our magic isn't the best but we make up for it with our models.

WE won't win every game, because you need to think and not just run at your opponent screaming.

I won't talk on Lizzies as i am little knowledge of them, someone here will be able to tell you better

Even tho most armies are alright for starting players but i started as empire 4 years ago and havent look back yet.

The main strenghts in empire are as follows...
Powerful Artillery and shooting, strong knights, cheap troops and detachment rules. There heroes are pretty decent as well.
The weaknesses i can think of the are proberly weak in combat and relay on combat resolution and only basic leaderships so is quite easy to break a unit.

Thats all i can figure for now havent even played the newlist since it was released to buzy being lazy.

    cheers.

Maybe you should make categories (like shooty, cheap points cost models, hand-to-hand specialists) and give the army a general area, and post it on the first post, that might make it even easier for people to pick armies.

Sounds good. So if anyone wants to give me a run down of an army they know quite a lot about, I'll add it to the opening post of the thread

What exactly do you want? How in depth? I have no problem going into the WoodElves, and Empire, but i do not know how much i should do. Im also lazy:shifty: , so less work is always a plus. I do think that you should maybe put links to the GW pages, because they are some very useful topics in there.

It's up to you; you don't have to write anything if you don't want to. This thread can just be used for its original purpose, which was to confine all these similar threads to one place. That way I wont slam my head through my desk every time a new one comes up.

I can link the GW main page in the original post.
