Fluff Competition you say? hmm... I'm interested. As this is after the Storm of Chaos, I think I'll have to enter a regiment of sorts.
Although I'm really liking Duellists, I see that Battle Pilgrim is already eying them up, and I don't want to trod on any toes. Maybe they'll be a second entry because...
I'm going for the gold! Paymaster's Bodyguard baby!! (although just the Paymaster would be an absolute dream)

Sounds like an interesting project Daelrog. I have a couple of ideas brewing for light cavalry I'll try and type out.

Johann the Actually-I'm-Perfectly-Sane-Don'CherKnow Scientist.

Johann is a scientist of the inquisitive nature. Which, for a scientist, makes him nosier than when Pinnochio declared that he'd won Miss world the last 5 years in row. His more recent experiments have involved a cannon based on harnessing the energy from lightning in a manner similar to that of the skacven warp lightning cannons. Unfortunately these have a tendency to spontaneously combust with often spectacular results.

It was the result of one of these explosions that caused Johann to be thrown out of the engineer's college at Nuln, through a third storey window, or at least a hole where a window once may have been. After this seventeenth such incident the professors of the college ordered him, and his contraptions, out

Far from being disheartened, Johann now travels the land in search of employment for his dangerous engine and has often found it at the hands of desperate warlords. His loyal servants, Markel the Quick and Kristiahn the Brute, have often proved popular on the eve of a battle, as Markel and Kristiahn are never far from a beer keg and have a sharper wit than a hippogryph's beak. Johann, on the other hand, is dour yet eccentric, always appearing grim faced and serious when asked for counsel. His demeanour changes completely with a spanner in his hand though as he chuckles to himself whilst tinkering with his infernal death engine. It is this strange excitement at his contraption, allied with his servant's drunken tendencies, that cause his allies to give a wide berth to the motley crew.

Cannon. To be used as a regular cannon for all intents and purposes, except that it fires wild balls of electricity instead of metal shot. Also, upon it's destruction, any unit in base to base contact (either crew members or a victorious enemy unit in close combat) take D6 S5 hits from the release of energy.

Quote:
Captain Sarri’s story is a tale of bold adventure like none before. He was born in the principality of Tobaro to a proud but impoverished military family. Their armies scattered, Sarri swore to gather the best of warriors to his cause, and return to reclaim his family’s honor. (a good start for any adventure don’t you think?)

Captain Sarri ventured out from home as a young youth of only twelve, despite a tearful mother and sister, and with only the best wishes of a poor and stoic father. With no sense of direction, he wandered across the small state of Tobaro and was lost in the Abasko mountains. He wasn’t seen again until his 18th summer, when he travelled down from the mountains as a changed man with arms, armor, and an army of forty men. He still lacked an education however.

His next wandering turned him southward, into the blighted Isles of the Sirens. Here it is said was the first place that he found love. Beautiful maidens with ivory skin and hair of shadow called to he and his men from rocky spires and the ruins of broken ships. He stayed in their embraces for the winter, and though they tried to feed him their eldritch fruits, he insisted solely upon finding his own sustenance. They tried to trap him in their wiles, but he bid the fair lasses ado and left at the first thaw of spring. The youth, ignorant of the nature of Sirens, vowed to keep each fair lady in his heart forever, and since has not answered the calls of even the most desirable of mortal women.

After looking about and saw that only one man had left with him from the arms of those beautiful damsels. The lone survivor was a norseman by the name of Kendrik, who had been wandering afar when he joined Sarri’s band. Horribly wounded in the mountains, Kendrik was left both blind and deaf. He had faithfully carried Sarri’s family banner through the mountains however, following the ebb and flow of the regiment around him, and lashing out at any who came too close to the entrusted flag. Together, Sarri and Kendrik journeyed Northwards, gathering a new army from the fighting men of Tobaro.

Ever uneducated, Sarri led his new army into the land of Miragliano via the Blighted Marshes. Seeing their borders thus offended, the Skaven quickly mobilized and before long Sarri’s company was in the grip of disease that withstood both number and name. With his men dropping dead all around him, Sarri continued to march Northwards, vowing to clear the bogs whatever the cost. Casting about himself, he found a giant of a man possessing a monstrously loud bellow, despite being prodigiously green with disease. Even blind deaf Kendrik was could tell that this was no man, but an Orc of great ferocity. Sarri nonetheless appointed the Orc as Sergeant and taskmaster of his army.
Goreteeth Mountainhide made an excellent sergeant, using his brutal choppa to instill fear into any man who was not dissuaded by his booming voice. To Sarri’s unintelligent ear, the orc would forever be known as Gordin (the differing inflection of course being accounted for by Gordin’s outlandish accent). This didn’t seem to bother the Orc, as he was simply thankful to have found a mercenary captain who deigned to treat him like a proper Orc and not a beast of burden. Besides- Sarri wuz a good fighter fer a ‘umie, and didn’t try ter act like e’was smarter den an Orc.

Gordin carried Sarri from the bog, dragging Kendrik along behind by the pole of the banner. The rest of the company had been killed by disease or by skaven attack, but now they were in Miraglio and all of Tilea lay before them. Together, the three soldiers travelled from inn to tavern, port to town, city to borough, and state to state gathering the best fighters they could find. Sarri’s wanderings were always finding trouble and whittling the company down to near nothing, but for the first time, their numbers grew. Over time, the rag-tag band of soldiers who followed Sarri learned to trust his mad wanderings. They led to riches and fame, and Sarri never even touched the women whenever they stopped to pillage. It’s not as though they had a choice- if anyone complained of the wandering, they were quickly... ‘redirected’... by Gordin’s choppa.

Two years later and the company has become a real fighting force, and is sought after by many kings and upstart warlords looking for extra muscle. They’ve gotten fancy uniforms, although they’ve kept the same lucky banner that Kendrik has so faithfully carried throughout their thousands of miles of marching. Now, Sarri claims that he seeks to board a ship. Hopefully one that will take him back to his home- wherever he left it- so he can reclaim the family honor at last.
The disbelieving sergeant in charge of the muster looked at the grizzled soldier, expecting him to continue on with the exhausting story. When the man only gazed back, the sergeant assumed it was safe to say he was done.

"You say you have an Orc outside?"
"Yessir" the soldier replied.
"And a blind, deaf, Norseman?"
"Yessir" the soldier replied.
"And you lot have been tramping around Tilea for what- the past 4 years?"
"Well, not all of us sir. Only Sarri and Kendrik have done that. Gordin's been with them for," he stopped and counted on his fingers, "three years and a eight months. The rest of us have been here for about two or three years though."

“Well” he said, “if this ‘Captain Sarri’ has done half the things you claim he has, we might just have to considering adding you lot to the payroll. What did you say you called yourselves?
The soldier started, “Huh? You mean a name? Well, we haven’t really got a name I don’t think.” There was a clamor outside the dock building where the sergeant was assembling the Dark Prince’s army. It seemed that all of Sarri’s bunch had tried to crowd through the door at once. From within the crowd, a frail voice suggested ‘Sarri’s Praetorians’, but it seemed lost amidst the shouts of Sari’s Iron Balls or The Well Hanged Men of Tilea. A far louder voice picked it up again though, “Sarri’s Pray-tor-eez!” and a hush fell over the company outside.
“Right right,” the soldier said “we're called Captain Sarri’s Praetorés”
Well, that was 999words the incredulous sergeant listened to. Here's what I've got for a regiment though:

xxBodyguard w/ Heavy armor
Captain Sarri- champion
'Gordin' the Orc- musician (no instruments, he's like an Ogre Bellower)
Blind, Deaf, Kendrik- the standard bearer
Sarri's "Lucky" Family "Banner"- this scrap of cloth is supposedly all that's left of Sarri's family banner, carried by Kendrik through countless miles of marching. Though it only hangs but 3 inches from the banner pole, the The Praetorés swear by it's luck.
Sarri's "Lucky" Family "Banner" counts as a Warbanner

Unit special rules:
Misdirection- Sarri's never been educated in anything but the arts of war, as he left home at a young age. While Sarri is alive, the entire unit suffers from 'Stupidity'.

I'm Scarier Den Dey Are!- whenever the soldiers falter, Gordin is sure to sort things right out. As long as Gordin is alive, he may deal 1, S4 hit against a Praetoré in base-to-base. If the model is killed, the whole unit is Immune to Psychology until the next friendly turn. This may be done at any point during any player's turn, but may only be attempted once per turn. Note however that if Sarri is still alive, the unit still suffers Stupidity

The Kislev 5th pike detachment "The Damned Bears of the North"

The story of this group starts with the birth of the man named Borrin Strong-arm. Born into the family of the local wizard of a small village out side of Kislev. As he was raised, his wizard father tought him to embrace the beasts and the wrath of nature. He gre and his father taught him they way of the amber colledge. He showed him the gods of Ursos the bear, Buccos the oxen, Corvos the crow, Kinos the beast, Venor the hunter, and Lupens the wolf.

When he grew into his teens he grew and his father became ill. He enlisted to help put food on the table. However he picked the worst of times to do so. As only a few weeks after he joineds his skills were put to the test. For the land was laid seige to the power of a WAAAAAAAAAAGH! He was put in battle four times before he even heard about what had happened to his father and village. The village had been razed to the ground. He fought with vengence trying to repel the WAAAAGH. After four years rumors of an orc camp swiftly spread thru the ranks. He asked to transferred to the 5th pike detachment as they were going in with 15 others like them.

After his request was accepted he met with the banner bearer. The two quickly became friends. The banner bearers anme was Arnforth. He was constanly rambling on about his younger galory days. The two friends made a blood oath that they would find who killed his father and seek revenge. after a while Borrin rose the ranks and became the leader of the group. They were his only family left and he felt that they would follow him to the end.

They were ambushed on their way to the camp. Wave after endless wave of green skins came at them. All hope was lost but then something happened that no one can quite agree on. But the basic story was that Borrin looked on and saw a boss. But this boss had something. The staff of Borrins father. Borrin was over come with more hate, more anger that he started to glow as his eyes turned black. They said that this was the blessing of Ursos. By thhis time his detachment was the only one left.

Seeing their commanders anger the others fekt the same. The fought with the strenghth and ferocity of bears. They quickly cut a bloody swath toward the warboss. Their Borrin challenged him and before the boss could utter his reply his head was sent fying thru the air. The fought more and more. By the end of the battle the men seemed to have grown in size. They had grown more facial hair and body hair. They appeared to have grown longer teeth. They knew that the Kislevites would not except them like this. This damned and cursed freaks.

Only one Borrin saw this for what it was. He told them that it was a blessing of Ursos. He had given them the strength to kill the orks. He said that they should use this gift when they see a need for it. And so his men followed him into the mountains. they say that when the time demands that fur clad bear men will come to lend the strength of Ursos.
They say you should pray hard and look to north for an banner brandishing that mrk of the Beast.

Rules: Treat as a unit of pikemen w/ full command. With the exception that their base strength is 4 as is their toughness.
They are so frenzied that they must charge if they can.

Looks; These men are all clad in rusted armour and fur cloaks. The bannner has a mark that looks like a bear claw surrounded with Beast like depictions.
Their colors should be alot of browns as the cloth is mostly hide. The models have facial hair.

Fear the power of the beast.....

Well this is certainly going well so far. Thank you everyone who's participated so far, and I look forward to seeing what's coming up. I'll start keeping track of everyone's entries on the first post.

As I said before, the temporary deadline is still December 1st, so anyone who only passes by this part of the forum on occasion, and those who need some extra time won't be pressured.

In other news, the next few days should see some action again in my arena. Hopefully I can get it done pretty soon and leave room for the other arenas.

We did a contest when I played in 5th edition about 10 years ago, where we were all asked to create in our gaming group, a unique Mercenary Unit, led by one hero type, for a overall dogs of war army.

The unit I created was Glorious Georgoff The Green Wizard ,and his Terrifically Trained Troupe of Trollicking Trolls.

He was essentially a Level 2 Battle Wizard, mounted on a barded Warhorse. I bumped up his LD to 8 his WS to 4 and his A to 2 to compensate that even though he was a wizard champion, he needed to be physical to handle his charges. Which were Troll's from the O&G's army list. He had two battle magic spells as is normal and could carry two magic items as is normal; and then he had his Trained Trolls.

I added special rules in, that as long as Georgoff was NOT using his magic, he had the Troll's under control and did not have to test for Stupidity. If Georgoff did use his magic in battle, then the Troll's did have to test for Stupidty but used Georgoff's LD for it. If Georgoff was ever killed, the unit would instantly go stupid. If any army had "beast master" type characters in it, or a level 2 wizard available and Georgoff was killed, then that army could "take over" the trolls.

That was later defined to say that any Skaven Clan Moulders packmaster, any dark elf champion from any infantry unit; a level 2 or higher Orc or Goblin Shaman could "take control" of the Trolls and bring them into their army if Georgoff was killed.

I did not point out Georgoff too higher then most level 2 wizards, I gave the Troll's standard stats from their rule book and he was used quite a few times, as this unique unit both granted an army a level 2 wizard AND a hard hitting unit that was unique looking on the battlefield.

Hmm... looks like interest and/or attention has drizzled off a smidge...

OVER HERE!

Now then, if you're kind of like me, I know there's many ideas that have passed through your mind that you know you'll never get to, throw it at me this time. So far I've really liked the ideas, though I'm not sure I can fit the post above, as I don't have any monstrous units in the army.

Hopefully this post can get a few more entrants in, less I extend the deadline to January 1st. Then again, I may do so anyways, just so people will have the half an hour to spare over the holidays.
