Hi, I want to start building a 1000 sons army. I haven't played 40k much, and when I have it has only been with/against SM, Orks, Eldar, Nurgle and Khorne Chaos. The Chaos armies never fielded special characters.
Anyway, I was wondering what you people thought of the quality versus point cost of the Chaos special characters, specifically Ahriman. About the only thing I've heard about any of them is that Abaddon is pretty sweet, but I haven't heard anything at all about the others. I get the impression that not many players use them. Is this a bad sign?
I'd like to know, because it will determine how I build my army of course, especially from the beginning, because to be honest I like the story behind Ahriman and I think the figure is really sweet looking. But because of money I'll pass if he sucks. I can't really judge just by looking at the stats without practical experience.
I know that the new codex is coming out and it changes things. But still, what do you think? and also, will a new Ahriman figure be released, or not (and therefore purchase it now?)
I'm going to wait a bit before I buy anything else, and I'm writing out lists of different army configurations in the meanwhile too. Thanks guys, and excuse my ignorance on all this.
You're going to get a lot of guesses on this one, but sofar as I know no one here knows the stats of Ahriman yet. You just have wait...
What we do know is that GW is currently making the special characters much more potent than they've been for last years. The goal is to make more people use them in games.
So Ahriman is probably going to be really good! But also very expensive...
No for the guessing part If you look at recent releases for comparing it is safe to guess that he will be able to use three psycic powers very turn and will probably have a force weapon that rerolls to hit and to wound... If I'm right that will make him really dangerous...
My tip is to start and buy a unit of Thousand son marines, paint them up and wait for the codex.
I'm sure you will get to use Ahriman ig you go ahead and buy him right now. He wont become a weakling in the new codex, thats for sure. Quality for points we don't know...
Also, take into account that if Ahriaman (sp?) isn't one of the good special characters (tycho comes to mind) you can very easily use his model to make a Tzeentch Chaos Lord.

Ikterus, you mentioned that GW would like to encourage more players to use the Special Characters...why is it that players now avoid using them? Is it because (according to the current codex) they aren't worth the points, or do players have some philosophical reason for not using them, or because they are not as modifiable, or something else? Just curious.
I find the story behind Ahriman to be very compelling... he and his fallen chapter have a different quality to them then the other (very much more) vulgar chaos chapters. I think that's why I'm so interested (and hoping he's worth getting) in fielding him.
Also: is there any chance some new special characters will be introduced with the new codex?
And another question: Are the stats for terminator lords and normal chaos lords the same? I saw an early post of the new codex stats and I didn't see anything about Terminator Lords under HQ... and has this always been this way or what? I don't have even an old Chaos codex on hand, and i couldn't find one online in PDF format either. Thanks for helping a total chaos newb and please overlook my blatant ignorance.
there is no differance between a lord in power armour and a lord in terminator armour, aside from better saves and an extra attack from termi armour, and the normal penalties associated with terminator armour.
The special characters in the new codex are all getting a boost to what they can do!. Ahriman will be pretty funky, think along the lines of Eldrad. And they are reintroducing huron blackheart.
The reason people were avoiding chaos special characters, was you could make something better using daemonic upgrades and chaos wargear!!!
In the following rule update this changed and for many years until now special characters have been avoided because you could most of time build better lords yourself.
The last year (or less) GW has tried to change this and are currently making the special characters more powerful and are giving them really unique features that you can never give a built character. This is mainly because its fluffy. The famous commanders in fluff should not be worse than the average Joe Shmoe character you build yourself
With this in mind it is safe to say that Ahriman will become a formidable character. Look for instance at Mephiston from the new codex update Blood Angels.
Hope that helps
I don't use special characters, but I'm told Lucius the Eternal is okay as well.. That said, that was about the time the model came out and you know how excited people get about 'new' stuff..You're kidding.. Huron gets a place in the codex?Yes, as Ang said Huron Blackheart will be a new character in the new codex. He was an rebellious Space Marine who started the Badab uprising and is now master of the Red Corsairs.
I think most people don't use special characters not because the Joe Schmoe build your own Lord is better but mostly because of the tactics change it involves and the point sink.
My joe schmoe lord is 190. Kharn is the only special character that is almost as cheap as my joe schmoe lord and honestly 190 is me really decking out my lord. Most of the Lords also require something like a unit to support them. Abaddon is the only special character with deamonic rune. That said here is a 196-235 pts special character that one well placed str 8+ shot kills.
my 190 points or less lord that has just as many if not more attacks then some of these characters but you have to hit him with that same str 8 shot 3 times to kill him.

Thanks for the info. Of course I'll wait for the codex before i make any serious purchases, but I'll be sure to post tentative army lists for your input, and just digest information on the boards until then.
