I'm unsure of where to post this question, since it deals with fluff and game play, so if it's moved, I understand.
I play Word Bearers so I'm used to only fielding Undivided units. But with the new codex coming out, it sounds like everything is becoming Black Legion-esque. Which means that legion specific rules are out the window. Also from the sounds of it, demons, a major strength of is army is becoming weaker and far more generalized. Can I make the case that, fluffwise, squads in my army could focus on one specific god? I'm talking Word Bearers Khorne Bezerkers, Noise Marines, etc.
I'm huge into the fluff, but it seems like many things that made up the appeal of Word Bearers has been stripped from them. Is what I'm asking viable, or should I just repaint my red and silver into black and brass?
Legion rules are out of the window, however... you could take large amounts of lesser daemons as they don't count as units on your FoC.
The cult specific marines (Noise marines, Plague marines etc.) are all troops now so using a word bearers colourscheme along with some cultmarines would be possible.
I know that I'm allowed, ruleswise, to use cult troops. What I'm asking is if I can legitimately field cult troops in a Word Bearers army.
In therms of fluff no as the Legion dedicates themselves to the panthaon of chaos and not to just a single god.
With the new 'Dex I'm really going to abuse the "count as"-rule.
I'm playing Word bearers too, and are going to use two Terminator Sorcerers with Mark of Tzeentch. But as the Word Bearer Legion only use Mark of Undivided - the two sorcerers 'count as' specially gifted sorcerers, not true MoT or 1kSons.
The same goes for my Berzerkers, Plaguemarines, 1kSons and Noisemarines. Sure they have marks rules-wise but they 'count as' being ordinary Word Berarers that just have been more or less influated by a certain aspect in the Undivided pantheon. As the Word Bearers commune with chaos very much, it isn't hard to imagine them being twisted in one way or another that suits their basic personality as marines. Sorcerers that delves as much into the warp as Word Bearers and specialices in daemons and making bargains with them are bound to be specially gifted after some 2000 years or so. The same with the Lords and marines.
Imagine a squad that time after time gets sent to the front to go hand-to-hand with the enemy side by side with Bloodletters will be strongly influated by the non-stopping violence, and have their skills honed to such a degree that it's eventually the equal to a true Berzerker.
I havent' seen the new 'Dex, as the GW store in Stockholm refuse to show it, even though they have it. But as I understand all it takes is some imagination to still be able to field your favourite Legion. Just learn to love the 'count as'-rule.
DoW means nothing, they don't follow the background.
Otherwise you could have guard with a few marines in it.
I've always loved the look and fluff of wordbearers but never their infatuation of demons. I was drawn more to the zealous and fearless preachers of chaos. (hey its like an evil black templar force!)
I never liked daemons so the new codex will allow my forces to branch out a bit. They may all bow to the chaos gods equally but Im sure there are certain subgroups in the army that bow to certain gods more than others. (if you are part of the rapidstrike assault group, I'm sure you are prayjng more to khorne in the midst of battle)
and if you are a sorcerer within the force you would probably bow to tzeentch a bit more.

From what I understand there will be 2 distinct ways to mark your troops in the new codex: giving squads an icon or making them full-blown cult troops (Berserkers, rubric Thousand Sons, etc.).
Since WB are dedicated to Chaos Undivided I think that cult troops might be inappropriate, but I see no reason why the army's squads couldn't carry the icon of a particular Chaos power. They used to be able to use all 4 gods' demons and weren't restricted to just Furies, so this makes sense to me.
My Chaos army is WB, and this is probably what I'll do (although I might just be a purist and stick with the Undivided icon and generic demons).
