Me in my never commiting attitude, got a Chaos Lord. Painted him in Word Bearers Colours, and really liked it. So, wat to get next?
CT over and out
I'd wait for the new releases. Get the codex (whether or not your new to Chaos) and the small box set of marines and rhino. then i'd get more marines, up to 20 total, and thats a start. maybe a heavy squad havocs (just by a box of SM devastators), terminators or squad of oblits to top it off. for the daemons, wait for the new models.
What kind of army build interests you? Ranged? C.c? Vehicles, walkers, termis, daemons, basic infantry, elite infantry? Answering this question will prompt members to give comments directed at your specific needs.

I will wait for the new Codex etc, but as an Imperial Guard player, is there Command Squads or Platoons?
I want a mainly infantry army rabbit.
CT Over and Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh *sound of hitting ground
EDIT: Hey, are all Chaos players rabbits? I'll get my Holy grenade of Antinoch then.
The new Possesed CM are awesome too

Overall, the garden (galaxy) is ripe for the picking. Just avoid the snakes (Tyranids), and occasional coke can (Necron) that finds its way into the garden. And remember, people aren't bad, they're just stupid.

There are no platoons or command squads, but you can have a retinue for your Chaos Lord. I'd suggest buying the new Chaos Codex when it comes out and read it thoroughly.

Contrarily to the IG, other armies like Chaos Space Marines field their units in maximum 10 to 20-man squads that count as 1 army choice, not like the zerg numbers you are used to. Basically, 10 Khorne Berzerkers for instance would be the equivalent of picking 1 full Infantry Platoon as a troop choice. Given, their is one hell of a difference in numbers (duh!!!), but every unit in the Chaos Space Marines, much like their loyalist counterparts, are much stronger point for point when compared to a similar unit of another army.
Ok... well as for choices for your army, it comes down to strategy, preference and fluff. Example, I'm currently building an Undivided Chaos army with the new 'dex with a strong affinity to Slaanesh and shooty business. What do I do? Put in a slaanesh sorcerer with lash and a few noise marines with sound weapons to satisfy the fluff, then pack in termies and havocs for some serious dakka dakka dakka (if you're wondering why no oblits, I don't have any yet ).
With Chaos, the possibilities are endless, read the codex and you're sure to find yourself something you like. Cheers!
What do Khorne Berzerkers say to Necrons after chopping some of their bits off? "BLOOD FOR... Eh? Come on! You just take the fun out of it... Scream! Yell! Awww... not even a trace of guts..." *sniffles and kicks dirt*
"You can go far with a smile. You can go even further with a smile and a gun"
