So, due to the new Chaos release I figured, why not build a new army.
Rough outline is a bunch of 1k sons squads as troops, Oblits for heavy support. I'm pretty much building a list from models I have lying around (painted or unpainted). I also have 10-something, Raptors around. And given their not as expensive I'd like to use them as my tankhunters... meltaguns and their pretty set I think. Also, use the icon to drop of my Oblits (as deepstrike doesn't scatter w/ an Icon, right?)
So, anyway, as pretty much anyone around here has read (and memorized ) the codex; what would be the best Icon? Or even no Icon at all? I'd say Nurgle for survivabilty. A 5++ save isn't all that I guess, neither are the extra attack or higher initiave.
Oblits can indeed use Icons to avoid scattering, but it's really only helpful in Gamma level games. If you happen to play Omega level games, then give your foot sloggers an Icon as well.
As for which Icon, I prefer either Khornate of Slaanesh. The Tzeentch one is too expensive for such a small benefit (cover is free!), and the Nurgle one is also rather expensive.
Khornate is fair priced, and helps boost their over all CC ability, which is where Raptors still shine. If you plan on just tank busting with them, then Slaanesh or Chaos Glory would be in order, since they're both cheap. Chaos Glory keeps them from running away, and Slaanesh makes them strike before standard MEQs, which increases their survivability more than you would think.
For me, IoN would actually be the last on my list. Raptors are designed to fly around and kill stuff, not get shot at. If you're exposing them to inordinate amounts of enemy fire you're using them incorrectly. Following this same principle, I'd avoid the Icon of Tzeentch as well.
Although IoK is tempting for the +1 attack, I think I'd be more inclined to use Slaanesh instead. It's cheap, and +1I will give you an edge against most opponents, allowing you to kill them without taking damage yourself.
The IoS pretty much mandates taking lightning claws in order to reap the benefits. Power fists strip away the synergy of the IoS.
The IoK is always useful, whereas the IoS is conditional based upon your opponent. Also, with the IoK, your raptors are effective, even if they're charged.
As for the other two, I'm with Caluin on this one. They're a little too expensive.
Spambot kill tally. . .337
Icons of Nurgle and Tzeentch are fairly expensive for up in your face units like Raptors. Point being that a 5+ invulnerable save is still overruled by cover saves and that the added toughness still doesn't help against instant death weapons (like those burly devastator squads with lascannons and missile launchers, arg!). As such, you'll be wasting your points on a dying unit (or sure to die, these guys get stuck up pretty quick ).
Well as for others... Icon of Chaos Glory is your safety cushion. It's not fearless but at least you get the satisfaction to re-roll. This is handy against opponents that love to use fear tactics, tank shock and the such. It's much cheaper that those other two icons too, so not bad.
Icon of Khorne gives your Raptors a well-deserved extra attack, making them even more dangerous in CC. Give your raptor champion some kind of power weapon and we're in business here, assured kills every turn on almost anything. While not the cheapest around, it's certainly more of a bargain than IoN or IoT.
Icon of Slaanesh gives you security for first strike. Slaanesh raptors will be hitting first against most independant characters and agile foes, only lithe Eldar will be hitting before your burly fly boys. Even so, this Icon is dirt cheap for what it does, a great investment.
Bottom line: Slaanesh, Khorne or Chaos Glory. It really depends if you're playing an assault-oriented army and want to emphasize on many attacks or first strike. Chaos Glory is useful to wrap up a few leftover points, but usually is a better choice for Havocs and the such. Personnally, I'd go with Slaanesh so their charges are never wasted by being pounded by whatever their target is, but Khorne is also very interesting.
What do Khorne Berzerkers say to Necrons after chopping some of their bits off? "BLOOD FOR... Eh? Come on! You just take the fun out of it... Scream! Yell! Awww... not even a trace of guts..." *sniffles and kicks dirt*
"You can go far with a smile. You can go even further with a smile and a gun"
