    who's gonna carry the icon?

Previously, I always made my aspiring champion carry the icon/mark for summoning- it made sense to put it on the last guy I would let die in the squad. Is this still possible with the new codex, or does the icon have to go with a regular trooper?

I have three reasons to never have an AC carry the Icon:

    1) Mind War
    2) Vindicares
    3) Greater Demon Summoning

If the Icon Bearer dies, the benefit is lost to the squad...

Well, vindacres will only be an annoyance more than a problem.
With the way the codex is, ground pounders are pretty much a dying race.
We will see a lot more mechanized chaos, I think. Making mind war and vindacres not much of a problem most of the time.
Chosen will be able to infiltrate to take the vindacre out.
Overall at the end of the day, it matters how you feel about it. if you think the all or nothing risk is acceptable, then fine. But if you think that you will be facing "true snipers" then make them choose between the hidden weapon or the benefit.

The aspiring champion has higher Ld so he's more resistant to mind war than a regular guy.

I'd say aspiring champ is the best place for it unless you have a greater daemon. Then pick whichever special weapon you want most. For me thats my meltagunner as even if hes the last man standing hes a serious threat (melting a land raider and all).

It was more of a modeling issue for me. I can't seem to have him equipped with a power fist, bolt pistol, and still be holding the banner at the same time.

But yes I would try to stack it on the champion unless you plan on summoning. Though if something can wipe your marines down to 1 man and lose the mark, maybe you made a bad move in the first place.

Personally I will place it on someone else but maybe have a champion carry the banner for coolness points since I plan on summoning a Greater Daemon. (i'm sure my opponents won't nitpick on who's carrying the banner as long as he knows beforehand who actually has the mark but it maybe not be so friendly like that where you play)

Why not put the Banner on a staff?

-or- (and this is just a suggestion)

Use the Banner as his Close Combat weapon, put the bolt pistol in hand, put the bolter on a strap (easily made usign Green Stuff or Epoxy). Or you could put the Bolter in hand and holster the BP....

banner on staff wastes the nifty banner arm we get now. (sorry I'm in it for the model aspects over the gaming aspect)

the banner can do that (planned to convert one as a nifty crozius/daemon weapon for my lord so it looks like the one from Dawn of War) but banner and power fist looked a bit odd I think. he can't swing both of those heavy objects in CC too well.

No worries. I need him without a mark so my greater daemon and can bust out and say hello. (though i will be losing a powerfist in CC for the daemon.....expensive..but we'll see if its worth it)

Just put the pistol and/or the bolter on the marine's belt. It makes for a nice affect.

Here's a kooky suggestion, make the icon a staff/spear and make it like the old nemesis force weapons all inclusive toy!
