I don't like them purely because they can Overheat and kill my own troops!
They are worth the risk of Overheating because of their exceptional stats.
I don't like Plasma pistol as special weapons can do the same job without exploding!
I'm not bothered by Plasma pistols one way or the other.
I've noticed a trend of negativity regarding the plasma pistol on the Chaos Forum.
I was wondering why?
I also thought it would be a good opportunity to try putting a poll on the forum for a first time.
I'm a fan of giving power armoured characters a plasma pistol just in case they come up against +2 Sv Troops or light vehicles (heck even the rear of a heavy vehicle).
Str 7 is nothing to sniff at.
It's not that plasma pistols are bad its just that why not take a meltagun? meltaguns do everything a plasma pistol can and more. The loyalists choose plasma pistols (in the few places they can) because it will give them the extra attack where the meltagun won't. However chaos has many more weapons now and even if they choose a meltagun they still have the extra attack.
So the biggest bonus of the plasma pistol is redundant. You might as well take the meltagun for cheaper and better stats with no overheat risk.
EDIT: just had a look at your poll, I think you've missed the fact that even if you choose a meltagun you still get the attack for your close combat weapon and bolt pistol.
Thanks for that but their are some troops (I'm thinking of Raptors off the top of my head) that don't benefit from Uber Grit.
I wanted the poll to also include the options for them as well.
(though any suggestions for an alternative question would be welcome)
Raptor meltaguns don't replace anything though. They are in addition to their close combat weapon and bolt pistol.
The wording under the raptors special weapon sub-section that raptors retain their bolt pistol with special weapons, save for the plasma pistol. Hence, the additional attack is preserved.

When I read the wording on the raptors it tells me either:
1. I can replace my bolt pistol with - up to 2 plasma pistol or 2 special weapon.
2. I can replace my bolt pistol with - up to 2 plasma pistols or take 1 special weapon without replaceing the pistol.
its a poorly worded entry but there is no way you can use number "2" in replace bolt pistol for plasma pistol without also taking the "replace" part of it for the special weapons. because of the grammer and punctuation in it the only way to not replace your bolt pistol when taking a special weapon is to segragate it which means it only allows you to take 1 speacial weapon.
Personaly I like having 1 Tank hunting raptor squad and 1 Heavy Infintry hunting squad. 2 meltas in the first 3 plasma pistols in the second.

Not only is it better to have a special wpn now since we have uber grit, but those things overheat.
I have some damn terrible luck with plasma. For instance rapid firing a plasma gun and one shot overheating on my plague marines. Failed the armor save.... failed FNP... SOB. That's one of the things I loved most about the new plague marines. The ability to make plasma guns safer. I was so tired of killing off all of my own plasma gunners in the old codex.
Plasma pistols are even worse... they cost the same amount of pts as a plasma gun, not as effective and severely not as effective and 5 pts more expensive than a melta gun. Also, if you put that pistol on a Asp. Champ. there's so many pts to lose, especially if you gave the champ a power wpn. and especially a p. fist.
It does seem that GW is really pushing Melta right now though as alot of the combi-meltas in the sprus and the rules make taking meltas a good choice.
I still think your ment to replace either your CC or pistol when getting a special weapon because it happenes that way everwhere else in the codex and it just simply makes sense.
As a comparison, look at the Plague Marine entry. Note the exact style of wording, except that the Plague Marines mentions that the list of weapons replace a Bolter, while the Plasma Pistol replaces a Bolt Pistol. It's the same situation with Raptors, except they have no Bolter to replace, so the bonus weapon is in addition to their existing weaponry.
Anyways, to keep things on topic... Meltaguns > Plasma Pistols. This was true even with our last Codex, even when we'd lose the +1 attack. Now, there is absolutely no reason to ever take a PP over a MG.
Okay so Uber grit seems to apply to everything these days - any advice on how to edit my poll?

Oh and on a side note regarding Plasma pistols - you can't give Special weapons to Lords or Sorcerers.
So what about a Plasma pistol for them?
