Welcome to Librarium Online!
Played a battle today, took far too many tanks and ended up against Tau, a pricey mistake!
Anyway I took 1 chaos spawn (that I made the night before) just to see if they really were that bad.
And I have to say I thought it did awesomely, scaring off a broadside and killing most of a squad of kroot. by itself. The whole 'not having a save' thing was a bit rubbish, but only noticed once it was in combat, as there was quite a lot of cover to help it out, but it's high T made it a pain for most things pointed at it. Plus the charge range it gets is very nice indeed if you roll well!
I'm impressed, i'll definately be having that lovely 'Tide of Spawn' box.
Has anyone else bothered to try them out, or just balked at the very suggestion after seeing the 'no save' bit?
If I've replied, i've probably used Italics...

I haven't yet but intend to try them out in a couple of weeks. The only thing that really bothers me with Spawn is the points cost of them.
I think spawn really needed 4 initiative, as it stands now they tend to get killed before striking.
Comparing them to a tyranid ravener of the same points they aren't nearly as good, less attacks (usually), dishing out less damage (no rending), slower and more fragile. However raveners are pretty good and comparing across races is usually inaccurate. Raveners tend to support Hormagaunts for example whereas
Spawn are there to try and keep up with the rhino's. The entire scene for chaos is much more fragile.
Personally I don't like spawn, sure the stats and the beast thing is good and all but they just don't kill...maybe I'm expecting to much from them but on Vassal my 3 spawn hitting stuff just didn't do much damage and got beaten by tactical marines in cc.
Check out my Codex: Farmyard Animals here!
If anyone wants any kind of help writing fluff for any kind of GW army just ask.
Wont be using spawn. Don't see the point of them. They don't do anything another unit can't do now, better.

The "A Smart Player Will..." theory is a complete paradox. If we make an assumption that everything we do is outsmarted, then theoretically we can never win.
I haven't tried them yet myself, but I'll have to give them a whirl before I condemn them entirely. I'm glad things went well for you. I'd reccommend a second test against something Non-Tau, as my grandmother armed with a broom could give the Tau a run for their money in close combat.
"If you can wait til I get home, then I swear we can make this last."
I think Tide of Spawn is interesting, conceptually. Turning a marine into something over double that in points, with a few wounds, and D6 attacks is nice. But paying the actual point value for one in a standard game? I think I will pass. That's a lascannon. Two raptors. A billion things that are better.

i agree with most, it seems like a pretty bad unit. but i'm definitely going to buy some of them to try them out. what's good about them is that you get one for free if you succeed with the gift of chaos spell, and that's really nice!
"I have seen you humans, trying to forge an Empire in the name of a corpse"
I agree with almost all of the above, the only way that the spawn will see competative play will be with use of the gift of chaos spell.
I like to refer to the chaos spawn as the Raveners "special" cousin, Bill...

I survived LO Chat thanks to: Karmoon, Rabbit, Process, Tossy and Meish.
I love spawn, but not for their playability, just for the awesome bits in the box. I would buy them just for that.
But really __ points, I just don't think I'll be using it.

For the current list I'm building up for, I plan on having my Daemon Prince with Gift of Chaos. That's how I plan on using Spawn. He'll be able to pop troops and get some help in the process, and if they devastate a squad that turn, I've got a fast charger to tie up another squad elsewhere. Good deal.
