I know there are many different views on this so, let's go through them one by one.
Missing anyone? I hope not.
So, Yay or Nay. Are the viable? If so, then why. Not a good choice? Why not?
The only one I really like is Kharne.
Strength 6 on the charge with 7 attacks at initiative 6, hitting on 2+ !
Also rolls 2d6 for armour penetration!
There is almost nothing this guy can't do.
So Kharne; yay!

The "A Smart Player Will..." theory is a complete paradox. If we make an assumption that everything we do is outsmarted, then theoretically we can never win.
i played them all out against each other. They ranked in order of points value, if anyone cares =). So, my Views.
Abaddon= In 2000+ yay, otherwise nay (even then ur only HQ choice)
Ahriman= Nay (unless playing a very specific tailored list)
Typhus= Yay if VS. Iyanden/Nidzilla/Mass infantry armies, otherwise nay
Huron= yay, this guy is awesome!
Lucius= NAY!!!! this guy sucks... He has a 3+ save and 5+ invulnerable, and because of his special rules you want him to take as many saves as possible.... not worth it.
Fabius Bike (yes Bike, read his page in the codex carefully, see if you find what i mean)= Nay, Unless Playing an army of solely 10xCSM with IOK, PF and 2x Melta Guns (my next army i think ^^.
Best for points Value
Abaddon (in big games)
Abbadon - Yay (agrees on the big games opinion)
Huron - Yay
Fabious - Yay if themed with superwarrior marines, although purely for the fun and fluff of the army rather than the character... i mean cmon... 160 point model with no invulnerable save :s
Typhus - Yay, he's the friggin' rock of Nurgle, and that takes a lot of effort and special rules to reach that esteem.
Kharn - YaY Ze best for sure, just cause his history is awesome and his point value / special rules just put the icing on the bloody bloody cake.
Arhiman - Yay I guess, I'm into psychic powers but he seems good on paper.
Lucious - Nay. Bah, his special abilities involve taking armour saves and he has a 3+ save? thats silly beyond all imaginable reasons... also Noise marines are generally known for other things than close combat, why make a special character made for CC, fluffy lists are the only ones who suffer o.0

i havent really tried any of the other ones but i know in the old dex typhus ripped insanely, but the shorted him a wound, also i like his ability with the manreaper but now they gave all deamon weapons that ability, kinda bleh but you kow i wanna try fabius cus of his fluff,i dislike CC so i dont plan on ever using Kharn but still i agree he seems one of the best
I love kharne and hes a big part in my tactics; well when i say tactics i mean to run at the enemy head long and distract gun fire, which he does surprisingly well, and get stuck in while the rest of my guys advance behind. so lets go through some of his finer points.Strength 6 on the charge with 7 attacks at initiative 6, hitting on 2+, rolls 2d6 for armour penetration and the fact that he looks cool too. i would say thats all you could ask for spec. character really
"You cannot kill me, I have seen how I die and it will not be to you. I have however seen how you die, my dear Colonel."Dragien, the Fallen Angel
Abbadon - slow and expensive, free VPs for the opponent
Huron - One of the best in the dex, totally useable
Fabious - no invul. save, no power weapon, no way...
Typhus - same as abaddon
Kharn - slightly better than Huron, very useable
Arhiman - better than he used to be but still expensive and slow.
Lucious - tied with Huron for second
