Ive finally found out how spawn can aid our armies, without being crap. Use them to absorb our dreads firepower. I use my dread with a plasma cannon, and with my squad of 3 spawn 1" away he nebver hits my marines if he goes nuts!!!
Woohoo!!! i cracked it =P
P.S. that and ripping guardsmen apart in combat
I'm eager to hear more if I'm missing something.
Using spawn to soak up dreadnaught crazyness dosn't make a whole lot of sense.

I like it. It's a useful, cute and fluffy idea. If the enemy tries to tarpit the Dread, the Spawn helps out. If the Dread acts normally, the spawn might scare the enemy into fighting the closer target. And if the Dread goes nuts, you can giggle.
But who gets the victory points?

Just get a rhino for a squad that will be sitting back and use it as mobile cannon fodder for the dready.
I think Spawn might restrict your dready too much.
Spawn can move up behind rhino's as a second wave offensive. The rhino's shield them from shooting. Tenuous at best though.

The "A Smart Player Will..." theory is a complete paradox. If we make an assumption that everything we do is outsmarted, then theoretically we can never win.
Archnomad, it's a nice thought, but at the same time, spawn models are a little too expensive for soaking up potentially crazed dreads. You'd be better off using a minimum lesser daemon squad. Better yet, just keep those dreads away from friendly units ;Y

Considering how cheap dreads can be... i like the idea of a CC dreadnought tag team... it's important that they're next to each other though..
I think spawns, while pricey, are still usefull.. it's a lot of attacks and a lot of decent toughness wounds right in the enemy's face. It's a damn shame they lost power armour though.. but, pretty cool that they're fast.
