for a total newcomer to 40k. I have played fantasy battle for years and years and was thinking of giving 40k a bash - mainly because it's a lot easier to get a game ! (so many more players at GW)
Is Chaos a decent place to start ? In fact which is the simplest army to play, that's probably my best bet
the new codex is pretty easy to roll into, the previous chaos codex was notoriously murky and difficult to grasp, so yeah, i think it is!
+ chaos gives you a wide array of different coloour scheme's and playing types (close combat, midrange firepower or lange range) so in all i say chaos is a good bet to begin with!
Got a "good" rumour from a GW staffer? Forget about it, LO'ers know more than any random GW shop staffer.

The Dutch Legion
I agree with Hezu 100%!
The new chaos codex is very easy to get the hang of and allows you to play any type of army that you want. It gets my vote!

IRON WITHIN, IRON WITHOUT!

chaos is most certainly a great place to start your 40k career at. although they may not be the easiest army to start with, they're still pretty easy and since they're a power armor race they're quite forgiving most of the time.
the easiest army to start with would probably be necrons, they have few unit choices and are incredibly strong and durable, but they tend to get pretty boring to play after a while.
"I have seen you humans, trying to forge an Empire in the name of a corpse"
Dark Angels is probably the simplest codex right now, but Chaos has be redone, is now quite simple (although you still have many choices), and has plenty of great models. Go for it!!
"Politics is the womb in which war develops"
yea chaos is fairly easy to play as theres not many extremely bad units in the codex except for spawn.
It's also a good army to grow with. Forgiving in the beginning and punishing for the enemy when you really got your strategy and tactics together.
And we got snacks...
chaos is just as good a place to start as a race like necrons and space marines because of the 3+ save and just the generally easier lists to make starting the game. Chaos might be a little harder to grasp for some players because of the marked marines and icons, or maybe even daemon summoning? But really chaos is fairly easy to use and offers some of the best things later on for players. (aka cool fluff and awesome parts for numerous conversions.)8Y
I agree. Chaos is great and easy to get into. Necrons are probably the easiest and most forgiving to play. In general, any MEQ army is easy to jump into for the most part.
Yes all around it looks like allow me to add some weight:
Chaos is definitely one of the most rewarding choices in 40K.
The possibilities are near endless. Our new codex is easy to understand but we still have a phenomenal amount of choice.
Gaming aside, for modelling purposes, nothing can beat Chaos - ever. Even Nids pale in comparison to what you can do with Chaos (no one mention hive fleet moloch).
In short, Chaos are rewarding throughout all aspects of the hobby. They're fun, can be competitive, great to model and paint.. and if I may say so, we get a good deal of experts here on the forums too - so help is never far away ^__^
