I haven't seen this mentioned elsewhere, and I'm honestly surprised nobody else has brought it up yet.
Without treading too finely on the "no posting rules" line, the Chaos Marine has a two handed weapon and two one handed weapons. Not OR as in the previous Chaos codex, but AND. The fluff says they use one or the other, but the wargear listed for the basic marine lists BOTH.
If I'm reading this correctly, it means a Chaos Marine could sit back and pound away at 24" with his two handed weapon, and then switch to a pair of one-handed weapons for the extra CC attack when joining assault.
This is, to be blunt, ridiculously versatile. An Imperial SM has to choose between an extra CC attack (using a divergence), or longer range. The Chaos marine gets both.
Is there something I'm missing here?
This has been discussed extensively and is reffered to as "Uber grit" or "Ultra Grit". You are quite right, the new CSM is extremely versatile!
What really bothers me is that rhinos cannot take Dirge Casters!
IRON WITHIN, IRON WITHOUT!
I survived LO Chat thanks to: Karmoon, Rabbit, Process, Tossy and Meish.
you're correct. what balances this out is that chaos marines are more expensive, and they don't have ATSKNF, which is a very nice special ability.
EDIT: those are some of the balancing factors anyway.
"I have seen you humans, trying to forge an Empire in the name of a corpse"
There are plenty of threads like this already about.
