Okay, here it goes. I want you guys to think of the best composition for a well balanced army, with still getting some guys for melee in there. I don't mean number crunching and all that, just some general strategies to keep them going while still getting good fire support/tank hunting.
Something I've seen on the forums that makes a ton of sense that I never realized before, is the armor rule. Take almost no armored vehicles, or take a good number of them. So if you use a rhino to get them across, be sure to put more armor in the list. A few problems that I'm having is what kind of melee guy to take. There are many options....
CSM (MoK) + Rhino + Lash Sorc.
No furious charge, bit cheaper than everything else on this list.
Khornites + Rhino + Lash Sorc
Good number of attacks.
^-- You can take out the Rhino and use a land raider if you wish.
Raptors(MoK) + Jump packed Lash Sorc
Good mobility, and doesn't use any armor. Still only MEQ STR though. Can be made versitile via meltas though. Can Assault first turn on a lucky roll.
Termies(MoK/MoT) + Land Raider + Lash Termie Sorc
Expensive as crap, but tons of power weapon attacks. Can also assault first turn on a lucky roll.
Termies (all champs, MoK, lightning claws) + Land Raider + Lash Termie Sorc
E X P E N S I V E. But if they get into melee, your opponent is VERY dead.

Defiler with DCCW replacing all weapons except the battle cannon. Very versitile, and strong against almost any enemy.
My personal choice would be to take the Raportors and go infantry heavy, getting some las cannons and/or missle launchers via Havocs. Also, taking noise marines with the sound blaster upgrade to get some good attacks vs horde armies.
If not, my other approach would be using a land raider with Khornites and a lash sorc, coupled with 1-2 dakka preds and a AC+LC pred. And maybe two cheepy (100 pts, woop) dreadnaughts with Multi-Metla's and rocket launchers.
Although the termies with the land raider do really just KILL things when they hit melee, I'm notorious for failing that save, be it the 2+ armor or the 4+ involn with the MoT. So it's not that I think they're bad, it's that I fail with them.
What are your guyses thoughts?
It all depends on what else goes into your army that benefits and combines well with the assaulty unit.
I'd probably go with CSM in rhinos backed by raptors and predators if I was too make an assault list.
terminators are good in higher points but upgrading them to all champions is a waste of points imo because they already have the mark of khorne and anything they hit with the same iniative or lower should be dead.
Personally I usually use regular marines in rhinos for assault as their ultra grit is just awesome plus without those extra icons making the squad pretty expensive, it lets me upgrade my chosen with icons. My chosen then become my balanced squad of shootiness.
My regular marines are backed by terminators deep striking via the chosen's icons. Lastly predators with autocannon/lascannon sponsons support.
Hope it helps as I really don't understand this thread, no offence.
Sorry if it doesn't make much sense.
The basic idea is that I try and go for balanced style lists so I can exploit whatever my opponent is bad at. If they're an assault army, I try and be more shooty, if they're a shooty army, I try and assault more. So I try and get some units of both styles in my lists.
And the reason I didn't want to show points is because I don't wanna look it up and figure out the numbers. Basically I'm just running ideas around. Because if you use a points cost, you also give yourself a points cap. Which would mean it isn't an idea/strategy, it's a list.
So... yeah. Just kinda throwing ideas around to see benefits and weaknesses of the multiple choices.
Another idea I had was running raptors with a Demon Prince with the lash. The reason for running the demon prince over a sorc lord is because then the enemy has to pick which to hit. And if you go heavy armor lists, they either shoot the squad with average stuff, and leave the DP alone. Or they hit the armored stuff with the AT weapons, or hit him with it. It makes them make more tactical choices instead of it defaulting to a single choice.
a DCCW-Patteren Defiler will give you
A) Battle cannon great for destroying Tanks from great distance
Battle cannon Great for wiping out Loads or Power Armored infantry
C) Many attacks to crush the enemy in Close Combat.
It's a tank that does will in CC. They should suit your meelee based army well.
What you really want to strive for is giving your opponent only one choice - the wrong one. For instance, two or three groups of Raptors alongside a Chaos Lord w/ Jump Pack, all being shielded by empty (or filled with cheap CSM) Rhinos. Your opponent has only one option now - shoot the Rhinos, which gives blocking terrain to your Jump Pack units. Jump a Sorc w/ Lash, bring a unit close for the Raptors to charge, and now you have even more blocking terrain.
Obviously, this isn't always an option, but it's something to strive for, if you really want to nail your opponent.
Have you given consideration to special characters? Fabius Bile, to be precise. You might like the idea of Enhanced Warriors with the Icon of Slaanesh. They're rather similar to Berzerkers, except they have the option for Special Weapons, and have their 'Furious Charge' on at all times.
