It seems that since the new codex ther hasnt been a Fabius Bile thread, and given that he came bottom of the 'special characters poll' recently, i thought (in the wierd way mind works) i would check him out in the codex myself.
After reading his entry, i have got to admit, i loved him! now, dont get me wrong, i play to win as well as have fun, but although random, i was impressed with his abilities.
- low WS given he has a large amount of attacks his relativly low WS for a hq is a little puzzling
- rolling a maximum, (especially on models that will take 2+ turns to get into combat) means you lose 2 of your squad before battle.
- rolling a minimum, chance of losing more of your troops, but the power armor save should help a decent amount here.
- massive chance of increased str & fearless to your whole army?
- feel no pain - he could be quite a sink of fire (lots of oponents getworried about hq's close to thier line and focus fire on them)
- ranged attacks, ok shortish range but with his multiple attacks from his assault weapon on 5 chances out of 6 wound rolls! thats not too shabby.
- close combat instant death rule with that many attacks, again interesting.
ok, im very new to the game, and ive never used him, but should he be written off? if played as 'support' to your army rather than the main focus of your army, doesnt he sound pretty useful?
ok, lets open this one up now
if your not already bored with all the HQ talk, lets have some constructive thoughts and opinions on why Bile is good, and why there are better choices?
thanks for your time
Bile just doesn't fulfill any specific purpose in most armies he has less closecombat power than most HQs and he cost more. His ranged attack from the needler can also be fulfilled by your regular troops much better.
Some reasons Bile isn't great:
-he doesn't have powerweapon attacks and although he has the Rod of Torment the enemy still gets his save, which is usually worse for you.
-he is slow and should be put in a rhino to make up for it.
-imo enhanced warriors is not worth the risk, but its really fluffy.
The only thing good about bile is his feel no pain, put even at that he's only thoughness 4 and he can be intantly killed by a melta. Thats a lot of points down the drain.
Most of all though everything Bile does offensively is better done by another HQ. If your playing defensively just go with a sorceror with the lash, and wings. That'll provide a better counterattack too.
just my 2 cents
You don't take Fabius because of his stats. He is lackluster and has an unimpressive display of weaponry. Lack of a power weapon and a low Initiative hurt him the most. He has respectable amount of attacks and a sufficient Strength value, but nothing special. A sub-par ranged weapon with a mere average Ballistic Skill means he's not much good in a ranged fight either.
So, since he himself is so 'meh', you have to look at what he offers your army. Enhanced Warriors are, quite simply, abusable. They have a risk, sure, but all the best things in life require a bit of sacrifice. We're Chaos; accept the fact that our troops are expendable. Take big units to counter any losses that you might incur.
Enhanced Warriors means that you will always get at least +1 strength. Unlike last edition, you can now combine that with a 'mark' and get even more benefit. Combine Enhanced Warriors with the Icon of Slaanesh, and now you have a group of Berzerkers with -1 attack and -1 WS, but with far better ranged weaponry options and 'permanent Furious Charge'. And they'll be roughly the same cost. And should the roll of a six happen; well, wounding MEQ on a 2+ and instant killing T3 characters is often worth the price you pay in lives.
Is having those benefits worth wasting points on taking a certain Special Character? I vote no, sadly, though I think the idea is sound.
As you said enhanced warriors is not worth the price of paying for him.
Now that I think about it maybe Bile's stats could go down to effectively make him cheaper, while keeping the enhanced warriors ability. It would make him into really great support special character.
Step back and take a look at bile's stats again. He's not designed for killing marines like all your power weapon-toting lords. He is infact the ultimate guardsman / ork / tyranid (lil ones) shredding machine. I really think there is a use for him there, granted most HQ's are very good at killing hordes and MeQ's alike, bile excels at eating hordes due to his high (and unlike daemon weapon wielding lords, reliable) attacks value coupled with above average strength. Charge him into a squad of ogryns and watch them disappear. Those wounds don't count for nothin'!
Basically, point him at lots of something with a low armour save, and let him cause havoc. Plus enhanced warriors on termies or chosen sounds awesome to me. Str5 Terminators with MoK and lightning claws anyone? There's only a 1/6(ish) chance of it all going horribly wrong
If I've replied, i've probably used Italics...
www.goodbyeboltgun.blogspot.com - Some of my stuff.
He's the kind of guy you'd never ever use in tournaments. That said, using him in casual games is fantastic, he's not a beast, but he is the fun mad scientist adding unpredictability to your army, sitting in the back...put him in a transport and let him beat up something small on the board. He's got more flavor than almost any HQ in the game, and that's saying a lot with the colorful cast that Chaos gets.
I used him twice in games of 1500 pts because I have the fig and because he's really well painted and even if he survived the two games I wasn't impressed. For the price he cost I can have a fully geared Sorceror with a Force Weapon, Wings, Lash of Subimission or Wind of Chaos and a Mark for less points than him.
I did try the enhancement on one of my CSM squad but it wasn't really worth it. It would be great to enhance some cheap cultist squads, but those are not available to us right now. In fact he felt like an overpriced sniper to me. Also the random stats on a character that cost that much are not my cup of tea, essentially his role is to give a boost to 1 troop unit mounted in a rhino.
He will not find his way in one of my list for some time I think because he's simply not worth it, only in friendly games with a story behind it will he be welcome to join a raiding party.
In order to justify spending so many points on an h.q, whose main benefit relies on additional marine upgrades, I would think that you'd need to juice up at least 40 chaos marines. That brings the total points invested in Fabius, along with the 'enhanced warrior' upgrades, to 280 points- which is 7 points per chaos marine that is upgraded in this way (i.e., 1 point more expensive than a zerker). Of course, this doesn't account for any marines lost from a roll of a '1.' If you're playing with 4 squads of 10 marines, then on average, you'll lose a little over 2 marines. That isn't a bad trade, especially considering the chances of rolling a '6,' which balances it out.
Spambot kill tally. . .337
That means I will have to try him again with the new codex rules. His stats makes him a good close combat character but the lack of a Power Weapon will hurt him even if he seems to be a good multi-wound character killer with the Rod of Torment.
Still he still cost a lot of points for what he does. I rather have Lucius for the same points, now that's a close combat character that is worth his points.
