Has any one tried/seen a spawn modelled as an obliterator?

Nope, but as much green stuff I had to use to make my oliterator fit right, I should have just made the whole thing out of it.

This is an experience I can empathise with.

A while ago the Yak and I came out with the idea of using smallish potatoes and simply stabbing them with various heavy waepons prior to the game.

I think it's a great idea. You may find best results with a mix of the different parts.

After figuring out that the model's weapons fit for crap, I covered both arms with greenstuff, stuck every weapon bit I had into them and then gouged it to look like torn-ripped flesh. They actually came out very nice.

Never seen spawn as obliterators, but it could probably work if you get a whole bunch of guns and glue them in. But make sure to tell your opponent that their obliterators beforehand.

i think it could work, it's just that i always like oblits with some remnants of power armour, but this is choas and it is your army, so go for it, i'd say.
Got a "good" rumour from a GW staffer? Forget about it, LO'ers know more than any random GW shop staffer.
