I'm the kind of player that would rather eat troop choices then use them in battle, but while searching for a usefull squad, which is still cheap, i came up with somethiing even I like.
check it out.
5 noise marines with sonic blasters.
for a totalof 125 ponts per squad, you get an awfull lot of shots.
that's cheap, and effective.
I know it ain't that original, so you probably already know it, but I really like this squad.8X
I think, if it were me, I'd go ahead and add the sixth. Make it an even number and an even 150 points.
It is certainly a good squad. Cheap, effective, and fearless--not to mention fairly mobile.
Personally, though, I think you're crazy. Chaos troop choices became incredibly good with the new codex. The regular Chaos Space Marines are fantastic, and all of the Cult choices are good picks as well. Playing a Chaos list which is short on troops seems, to me, like missing the point and gimping yourself all at the same time.
As a brief addendum: 100 posts! Woo!
Once again, the conservative, sandwich-heavy portfolio pays off for the hungry investor!
In order to be effective against MEQ's, your 5 man squads needs at least a 2-3 more members. You can also include a blastmaster with your 5 noise marines, which grants them the dual role of both swarm & tank busting.

you're both right.
I'd rather use the points to get me another dreadnought.
I haven't played this squad a lot, so maybe I'll change my mind, but so far I've used this squad:
6 CSM with plasma gun. and I've tried larger squads, but it always came out bad for me. I like to play fast moving troops. troop choises can't do that, but these noise marines, they mey not be fast, but there firepower makes up for that.
as you probably have guessed by y name, I play Tau. and it's the same. I'd rather play 2*5 fire warriors, and an extra crisis suit, then 2*10 fire warriors.
there not maneuvrable enough for my play style.
For fast moving troops, you can always use rhinos. When given extra armor, they can deflect a decent amount of damage on the first round (blowing smoke as well).
The thing is, chaos marines are our strongest asset, and taking a single min squads with one special weapons doesn't do much. While it works ok against agressive c.c. armies, which force you to sit back and fire, these small units can hardly footslog with any timely effort. Just something to consider. Best of luck.

The backbone of any csm army are it's standaard marine sqauds, these guys are a steal for the points cost, well able to fight in either cc or in range.
Without them a chaos army simply can't work, I always take at least 4 sqauds each at least 9 man large and I have not been dissapointed by their performance.
and what of the 5/6 man noise marine squad?
you're saying that's "useless" too?
I just don't play very much troop choices, so I try to make them as good as I can for so few possible points
Sorry. I know "u" isn't an English word. I was typing a little to fast.
I still wouldn't take sonic weaponry..
In fact, Lash of Submission aside, Slannesh seems got a bit of a shafting in the new codex. Noise marines are still expensive and fragile, their guns haven't got any more range than before, and now they can't infiltrate. This means, effectively, they have to run through heavy weapon ranges to get within 24" then engage in bolter duels with much more numerous and low point troops, who may well have plasma or heavy weapons to round out the odds.. Oh, and the blastmaster, while admittedly quite good now, is also prohibitatively expensive..
In short, sonic weapons didn't work (at least not for me) in the old codex, and I doubt they will now. Take a decent sized marine squad and give them close combat gear instead, give them a rhino for mobility and watch as they roll down the board and swamp your enemies in power armoured bodies.
Shas - 'u' is not a word in the English language. It's 'you'
Secondly, I'd just like to echo Dreachon's thoughts.
CSM are still one of the best troops choices in the game. To not use them to their full potential is an absolute waste.
I'm an Alpha Legion player, and I'll state openly, that most of my victories haven't been from tooled up lords, fancy raptors or other things. It's been CSM and Havocs, brutally smashing the opponent down
