I just got a box of 10 Chaos Marines to convert into a squad of Plague Marines. A few of the official Plague Marines carry a knife representing their close combat weapon, but the knives look pretty wimpy. I would use the chainswords but I'm afraid they don't go along with Nurgle fluff (am I wrong about this?) What alternatives do I have, or should I just model all of my Plague Marines using both hands to hold a bolter? I'd really like to show a few of them holding a nice CCW if possible! Thanks
nurgle = prime candidates for conversion of all kinds.
Close combat weapons could really be any kind of mutation you'd like,
a small tentacle that sheaths itself in the marines flesh or armor and comes out on command to slice into its foes or grasps onto the enemy to allow the marine to do other devious things to it.
Nurgle is the god of disease/insects/all things foul really, you could have a praying mantis + bayonet type attachment on the boltgun, armor, etc
Or just take one of the knives and convert it into something a little more nurgly, a knife bubbling with pustules and dripping foul substances down the blade, of course leading to nasty infections and plague to spread from any wound. have a tentacle or something grasping it, allowing the marine to free up his hands for shooting.
I dont remember reading too much about plague marines not liking chainswords, did you ? They just dont like a lot of non-infantry, aka very few transports/vehicles.
I'm starting a "purge" plague marines army that is made in the death guard image, just with a different paint scheme but sticking with the infantry only feel to it, i honestly dont plan on worrying about CC weapon conversions, my conversions are all going to be about the armor itself, making it look diseased and filled with the favor of nurgle.
Green stuff is a nurgle modeller's best friend.
lots and lots and lots of options, this is just all i can think of on 4hours sleep and about to head to sleep for another 4 and get up for work ><.
Id go on sites like coolminiornot.com , that have large lists of pictures and you can search "nurgle" "close combat" etc and find some more ideas, read the codex again, all kinds of stuff in there, and im sure other people will list some nice ideas, there are a lot of nurgle players here =)
just open your mind and let the nurgle in

You can also look at the chaos warrior fantasy weapons. There are a number of very good looking axes, war maces, and swords. Actually, they look a lot more menacing than our puny little knife bits, which remind me of angry toothpicks.

I agree with Rabbit. The axes on the Chaos Warriors are especially cool looking, if you ask me.
I like to add beyonets to the bolters of my CSMs to give them some extra edge in close combat. It's pretty easy: all you do is cut off the handles from the little knives that come on the sprue and attach them to the end of the bolter grip, under the barrel. It's a super easy conversion that makes them look a bit more spikey and intimidating.
Thanks for all of the suggestions. That pic is great -- I have plenty more ideas now. I'll probably try my hand at creating a few weapons from plasticard and spare bits... we'll see how it goes
