I got the chance to see a few of the armies that I'll be facing in our clubs 500 point tournament yesterday. I'm a bit concerned because the Imperial Guard have 2 tanks and about 50 infantry. Tyranids I counted 34 models, of which 7 were Genestealers (who caused carnage in their two games with infiltrate). Orks will have about 30 infantry, 3 bikes and a trukk. Necrons, who I thought would be few in number, have 16 Warriors and 3 Wraiths.
I break out my pen and pad to make a Nurgle army and all I can get is:
Sorcerer. MoNurgle. Doombolt
6 Plague Marines. Meltagun. Champ with Powerfist.
6 Plague Marines. Meltagun. Champ with Power Weapon.
ZOMG I'm going to get overrun! My HQ will have to be a sorcerer as I don't have a HQ but someone can lend me a Sorcerer. All I have so far is 14 Plague Marines. Sorcerers, are they any good? When I played WHFB, there would be wizards casting up to 4 spells a turn, but with 40k I've got a HQ who can only cast one spell. Warptime requires me to be in combat, but do I want to get a sorcerer in combat when he's only slightly better than PM with two more wounds and two more attacks? I really don't understand how Psychic Powers can influence a game greatly. Doombolt, is this worth the points? And Nurgle's Rot, I'd really like that on a Daemon Prince, but I don't have the points for a DP.
Is the HQ required? It seems really expensive for such a low-point game. Maybe...
2x7 Plague Marines, 2x Flamers, Plague Champ + Power Weapon + Combi-flamer
Alternatively, if you prefer more bodies, you can field up to 18 vanilla PMs with an Oblit with points left over for Flamers.
yes, it seems that HQ's aren't mandatory in your little thing, so I (and I think everyone) would advise you to drop the Sorcerer. An oblit may be handy as anti tank, though they will probably recieve the 1 or 2 anti tank weapons that th e enemy has. why don't you try spawn? 8X
seriously though what type of tourney is it? often they will be run with some funky rules at such a small point size for a bit of fun, such as CoD, or different missions... this would also affect what you choose.
I was going to say plague bikers, as they virtually won't die, but that only if you can afford it!!!
It's only 500 points as 4 of the 8 players have recently started playing 40k and are in the process of assembling and painting their army.
Conditions are 1+ HQ and 2+ Troops. Which buggers me when my HQ costs 90+ points.
Best I've got is
Daemon Prince. MoN. Nurgles Rot
6 Plague Marines. 2 x Plasmagun (shooty squad)
6 Plague Marines. Melta Gun and Champ with Powerfist (assault squad)
Giving the Daemon Prince Gift of Chaos might be fun. Being able to create even one Chaos Spawn would be pretty huge. It would also instantly gain back double the points spent on the spell (40 for the spawn + however much your opponents unit cost). Anyway, might be worth a shot, especially against T3 imperial guard models!
The daemon prince absolutely needs wings, even if it means losing a psychic power to get them.
Chaos cult armies don't do so well at such small points...you're best off getting as many plague marines as you can (along with their weapons and such).
yeah thats true. you may be better of saving some points and making them normal marines, as everything costs so much for MEQ's. The reason I bring up the no Force org. thing is that the Necron player doesn't seem to have 2 troops.
This is quite a problem you have.
How about this
DP - 150
6 Plague Marines - 168
6 Plague Marines - 168
That leaves you with 14 more points, for something or other. Maybe Doombolts on the Prince, or Nurgle's Rot if they'll let you go over a little. Most tournaments are pretty strict about that though.
Basically a list like this will do well, I think, because of it's high toughness and FnP. Soak up as much enemy firepower as you can and simply outlast your opponent - hope the DP gets into close-combat.
I'd like to point out that the necron list, (16 warriors, 3 wraiths) is a clear break of the rule. Recheck the rules?
That's a good list Grimmtu, I'll use something like that.
About armour, there are a few Rhinos around. Will I need meltaguns to kill them?
Here are the lists:
Necrons: Lord, 2x8 Warriors. 3 Wraiths.
Tyranids: Broodlord, 6 Genestealers. 2x12 Gaunts. Zoanthrope. 3 of the things that are bigger than Genestealers and can shoot. Maybe other stuff.
Chaos: Lord, Rhino, 2x6 Marines (I think they are PM's but I'm not sure)
Space Marines: 2 Land Speeders. Some infantry and a HQ. Not many infantry here, about 20 I counted.
Imperial Guard: 2 Rhinos and about 50 infantry.
Dark Elves: Haven't seen his army, but I know there is a Raider in there.
Orks: Trukk, 3 bikes and about 30 infantry.
There you go, that's it all. Meltaguns or no meltaguns?
Also, I didn't want to make this into an army list post, but more of a helpful topic when playing smaller games. So maybe it could stay here if possible. Thanks.
