I've two boxes of plague marines ready to be put together. However I have only one power weapon for my champ and no power fist. I've read that powerfists are superior, but with 5th ed looming (in a long while) and the rumoured changes to powerfists (they don't grant an extra attack when charging), should I use power weapons instead?
And what is it with GW giving me only one plasmagun in the Plague Marine box? Argh.
Yea i found that real annoying too. The powerfist in my opinion, its double str and no armour saves makes up for attacking once. As for the only one plasma, that's GW sticking it to all use PM fans. I just took a spare csm and made 3 of them into plagur marines, one of them with plasma so it now it's a 10 man squad with two plasmas.
I actually find that Plague Marines don't need a champion at all. They're fearless so you don't need the leadership buff and take a charge so well that all they really need is another squad of whatever sort to help out if needed.
My advice on power weapon choice: until 5th Edition actually comes out, don't build your list around it. Better to have fun doing what you want than gambling on exactly what changes will be made. You aren't a 40k player until you've made this gripe (or a similar one). Congratulations! You're in the club! 8YAnd what is it with GW giving me only one plasmagun in the Plague Marine box?

I would look into making your champion's arm magnetic or pinnable. I just recently started a plague marine army as well and wanted to make sure that my champ wouldn't be outdated come 5th edition. I now have 2 swappable arms, one with a plastic power fist on it (ordered from TheWarStore.net) and the other with the metal power weapon sword. I actually used a combo of a 2mmx1mm magnet and a pin below it... it works well on the heavier metal arm (the magnet wasn't strong enough for my liking... you could actually get away with just 2 pins and no magnet). I'll try to post some pics tonight when I get home. And, why stop there? I figured I might as well make the other arm swappable as well. Now I can outfit him with a combi-weapon if needed!
As for the plasma guns, I ordered one box of plague marines and one box of regular chaos space marines. I converted one of the metal plague marines to hold the plasma that came with the CSM box and then I ordered an extra meltagun bit for the CSM squad. So, I now have one squad of metal plague marines with 2x plasma and one squad of nurgly-converted plastic CSM's with 2x melta.

i highly recommend not buying death guard plague marines and instead using regular csm and converting them, it really isnt that hard to add some nurgly bits, holes in armor with an xacto, pustules with small round bits of clay or anything else you can find. You get more heavy weapons, and more marines for your dollar.
Well I personally just like the way the death guard plague marines look and wanted at least one unit of them. Still I generally agree, picking up at least one box of plastic CSM and converting them is a good idea. Plus the CSM just became even more useful with the new ForgeWorld convertions

Thanks all. The pinning idea was good, I'll look into that one.
This might be so simple, many have ignored it. Why not use Green Stuff to convert a bolter into a plasmagun? Cut away the bullets, add a block of greenstuff to cover the gun barrel, which makes the gun a little longer, then put a plasmagun barrel on the end.
My enthusiasm got the better of me with the champ and I added a power weapon. I might add another to the other squad and say they are both powerfists.
For the Champions, Power Fists are the only way to go. If you face vehicles or higher (T5+) Toughness opponents, you can be in trouble without a Power Fist.
If you want Plague Marines in Rhinos, go for Meltaguns. On foot, Plasmaguns are better. Remember that FNP applies when rolling a 1 for Plasmas.
As far as modelling goes, if you need extra Plasmaguns, try removing the barrel from a Bolter, and adding the front end of a Plasma Pistol to the Bolter. It looks perfectly o.k.
For Meltas, if my memory is still working, I think Obliterators have a Melta barrel amongst their sprues. Add that to a Bolter body.
