Chaos Dreadnaughts are interesting things. They are unreliable enough to kill your own Rhinos, but awesome if fire-frenzy is rolled when a squad has just been lashed and you have missile launcher W/ Plasma cannon. So, what is the best set up? I can see the bonus of having Dreadnaught Missile launcher Plasma cannon Total 105 If I get fire frenzy this thing can lay down the pie-plates. The other option is Dreadnaught CCW Heavy flamer Total 105 the catch with this one is that it is almost worth a normal DP with no upgrades, and the DP does relatively the same thing. One I am curious about is Dreadnaught Plasma cannon Total 105 This one can do the usual, but it can make use of fire frenzy or blood-rage. I am trying to figure out what type to use in an army with six other tanks already. My list is the one in the list area called "A failed Army list" Thanks.
Hmmm. I actually tried the Plasma Cannon/Missile Launcher combo once and it failed spectacularly. But the key word here is "once." I think it may suffer from the same problem as a 2 CCW dread - too much specialization. Dreads need to be balanced, because you never know if you'll go into a blood rage or fire frenzy. However, in a game where it's generally best to specialize for a specific role, this need for balance is a disadvantage.
Just some advice. I personally really like dreadnoughts, but I know they're not the best. The key difference between a dread and a DP (since you make the comparision), is durability. A DP has 3 wounds, can't be insta-killed and has an invulnerable save. The dread can die to one lucky special/heavy weapons shot (although to be fair, it's completely unaffected by lower strength weapons which can harm a DP).
I go with CCW with heavy bolter and plasma cannon, I now have a excellent anti infantry weaons that can take out light vihicles. As for the frenzy thing, you could put PM or 1k sons between it and you, that way if they does get hit by a barrage, they have something to protect them (i.e FnP and the invulnerable save.) If it rushes you though, i dont know if it can loose that frenzy next turn and the fight be over. I just put the thing as far away from my other units as possible.
Nice Maximillian Hapsburg pic, btw. I didnt expect anyone on here to recognize it.

I think grimtu has hit the nail on the head with his advice, and I too like the chaos dread even though its probably not the best use of points, I think the best combo would be a plasma cannon for all round infantry killing power and its not partiularly high strenght so shouldn't harm your tanks so much and a normal CC weapon so it can kick ass in CC too. Personally I can't see why people hate the dread so much, I actaully find it difficult to see how people mangage to blow up there own tanks since I ussualy isolate my dread on a flank and let it go on a little solo mission where its far away from your own men/tanks and let lose to see how much damage it can do...

You said your army consists out of 6 tanks already. That sounds a bit like my IW armoured assault list, so here's my advice.
The dreads you list are ok choices. Unfortunately, the plasma cannon is the one who can damage a Chaos tank (except the LR) on the side, and that is probably where you have him running.
So, putting two CCW's on him is not that bad an idea, as it will give you an extra threat your opponent has to deal with.
But, as the others have mentioned already: try configurations through trial and error!
Innovation suffuses this hobby like a tea bag in the boiling water of play.
The thing is, as a CC dread, I feel that points would be better spent on a plain joe prince.
I would go for it to add some more armour to the list. I could also instead get a five man squad with a Rhino, to serve as a diversion for anyone who targets the Rhinos.
Plasma can be very dangerous to the back armour of Rhinos, and that would be where it is facing, as the Rhinos would be moving up the first turn.
A heavy bolter is a certain No-no, as it has too much chance of killing the others.
I think I will try out the plasma/missile launcher dread. The option of rolling a six is not bad, as it allows the dread' to move away from the Rhinos.
Also my opponents use terminators a lot (deathwing) so plasma is a good idea.
I go for the extra CC arm and then drop a CC arm for the RL. 100 pts, and it can't harm you (if you run it near a vehicle, blast the vehicle with the frag launcher. )
And if you want to be a RAW lawyer, this would also give you an extra attack, even though you drop an arm for the RL.
I like Chaos Dreads, but have suffered from 'Crazed' shooting against my own units. So now I field them with 2x DCCWs, including 1x Heavy Flamer. Sometimes I use Extra Armour, depending on the points for the game.
I use them to support Assaults, mainly in Apocalypse games, as I rarely field them in normal 40k anymore. I usually use Smoke in Round1.
The ML/LC version of Dreads can be useful for Deathguard, 1000 Sons etc, giving you cheap long range anti-tank. Find it some cover, and blast away.
Serbi mentioned my favorite configuration above.
Dread w/ ML + DCCW + Heavy Flamer
With this setup you still preserve the versatility of having a ranged and CC weapon but also have the cheekiness to choose the less damaging missile should you frenzy your own troops.
