Many people suggest me to have icons in my army but I am not sure what the best unit should have icons with it. Any suggestions?
I like plaguebearers,
T5, 5+ inv, FNP makes it hard to take them out.

The "A Smart Player Will..." theory is a complete paradox. If we make an assumption that everything we do is outsmarted, then theoretically we can never win.
Plaguebearers are definitely the best unit to take an icon with. They are tough as nails and should withstand enemy firepower. My suggestion is to take a couple small units of plaguebearers, maybe 5-8, and put at least one in each of your forces, so that no matter what you'll at least have 1 squad with an icon in your initial "daemonic assault." What's nice is that normally your enemy will want to take out your icons quickly to make your deepstriking more difficult, but by putting the icon with plaguebearers, it not only draws firepower away from your better units (because we all know plaguebearers aren't much of an offensive threat), but it also frustrates your opponent because they can withstand a lot of punishment before going down. Hope this helps.
too many players overlook the icons yes they are expensive but they are worth it!
mandatory number is 2 ie at least 1 for each group
what units they are good in is a matter of oppinion
hq's arn't generally best for this it tends to paint a target on them that they just don't want especially if you happen to be slaaneshii or tzeentch
i'm not sure if elites can take em maybe the bcrushers but even if maybe you shouldn't they arn't very speedy and tend to cost enough as is
troops in here there are 2 that are best for it though everyone can take it i personally beleive daemonettes are the better option as they can fleet into a better position to summon the rest, the other is plague bearers but i really don't like em they may be tough but they are expensive and slow
in other words you better like the place they deepstrike to cuz the rest of ur guys are gonna end up there too they are just too slow to get into better positions a really bad choice if you like to keep the pressure on the opponent
and in case somone wants to argue the deepstrike point nettes can deepstrike further and thus safer and still reach a good position whereas nurgle needs to be lucky to not hit the enemy and then survive the inevetable torrent of rapidfiring death fired at them to attain the same position
fast attack their is a totally sweet option in the form of seekers cavalry with an icon need i say more more?
again i don't have dex with me but even if the dp can take a icon it wouldn't be a good idea these guys are too slow to make adequate use of em and the upgrade to make em fast is too expensive

I would say any troop choices and fast attacks should have an icons on them....whether they go out first turn or not. Just for the simple fact that you don't want just one icon in your army...and you at least want a few on the battlefield so they don't get taken out first shot...Also it is not a good idea to just have them all gathered in the same spot...due to weapons that use blasts and such they could wipe out half of two squads in one shot...so it it important to have more then one...but you don't want to put them on anything that is going to be a target (like an HQ choice or an elite).
I have to agree with Meish.
In my experience, putting an icon in every troops choice I take has worked very well. Sure, Plaguebearers are the most resilient Icon-holders, but Daemonettes are fast (getting that Icon where you want it, when you want it), Bloodletters are crazy deadly when reinforcements arrive via deepstrike, and its always nice to have an Icon on your Horrors if you're deepstriking in more Horrors for the range.
And, in the event that you lose a squad or two, you've still got Icons to work with. You don't have to worry as much about protecting that supremely important "Icon Squad".
Without going into too much detail my army consists of seekers, hounds, daemonettes, horrors, and DP(s).. this also raises the question if i want the enemy to take shots at my units when they come in via the icon. ..
If PBs are too slow for you, then maybe BLs would be a good comprimise. I haven't run their stats compared to horrors, but they have good toughness and the standard save, plus you want them close to the enemy and they move faster than PBs.
The point about BCs is a good one- I just checked and BCs can take Icons. They're pretty hard to kill and you want them close to enemy- they're pretty much the ideal icon bearers for the most part, though they're as expensive as hell.
I remember someone on another thread mentioning that they thought a good number of Icons is 1 per 500pts or so. That would be 4 for a 2000 pt game. That sounds fairly good to me.

a quick question about the rule of DS. Do i do it as a movement AFTER my other units moved or before everything?
