I only just noticed in the Havoc entry that there is an option for an Autocannon at the same price as a Missile Launcher, which is also the same for trrop choice marines. When did they slip that in!
Seriously though, does anyone use them very much in either havocs or marine squads or have any play advice for them? I am currently constructing a 2,000 pt all-infantry force in a very short period of time and don't have the time / funds to experiment with weapon loadouts at the moment. My heavies currently involve 4 HB Havocs, 4 Missile Havocs and 2 oblits but i was thinking about switching one of the unconstructed Havocs into Autocannons....
I actually used to use them vs my brothers orks, because I thought it was twin linked, so I was under the impression they were way stronger than they are, take a heavy bolter I think, its just a little stronger than the bolter, 3 shots and reasonable ap.
Autocannons are nice vs higher toughness, like warbosses or maybe just against marines, but I guess its personal preference.
so do do you think i should stick to my guns with the 4 HB & 4 ML? autocannons seem to be sort or half way between the two choices, and I'm not sure which i should drop. I'm not sure the added str. is enough to justify +5 pts and-1 shot over the Heavy Bolter, but I'm a bit worried about it not being able to cope with most vehicles like the misslies can.
I use autocannons in my undivided havoc squads in most tournament with good results. When you don't know against what you will fight, they do good. My havoc squad is 2 Missile launchers, 2 autocannons. I know most people here will advocate against mixed weapons in a havoc squad but these did good for me. I also usualy field a predator and a defiler so my Heavy Support is well rounded so to say.
For me, havocs exist to support any units that need support and Predators are made for tank hunting. So my havocs are fitted with weapons that can take out troop transports, skimmers, dreadnoughts and the like and my predator is going for the big games. They do well agains hordes too.
I don't know if I can justify my choices, but they did good up to now.
CHAOS Undiv.: won 14/22 games EC: 4/7 WE: 6/9 DG: 10/15, TS: 3/7 Orks : 13/20 SM NL : 1/6 TAU: 14 of 24 IG: 3/7
Against orks and dark eldar there a godsend, good strenght, long range, multiple shots and decent AP value.
They make speed freek players cry a little when you deploy them. This I'm sure of.
With the advent of 5th upon us however, the improvement of the blast marker generated by the frag missile might well mean the missile launcher will see more use against hordes.
That said, autocannons are awesome against all light vehicles and large monsters without a decent armour save, or ones with an invulnerable who'd be saving vs. the missile launcher anyway.
And most importantly I like autocannons.
If I've replied, i've probably used Italics...

with the old autocannon vs Hbolter problem, it really depends what you are fighting, if I was fighting marines, or some other MEQ or yes, fighting speed freaks, the best would be the autocannon for wounding on a 2+ everytime and able to pierce weak vehicles its perfect.
but for mass hordes like nids or orks, the heavy bolter will pierce most armor so thats just fine for what it needs to do.
Personally I find the one less bullet worth the trouble, but it wouldn't be so much of a choice if they were the same price.
I have found that missle lunchers are more flexible. Str 8 or a small blast templet, lets you use them as you see fit. I like Autocannons, however i tend to lean twords missile lunchers.
I think Autocannons are great on mobile units such as terminators and predators that can maneuver to positions to put s7 to good use, ie: move around for side shots on heavy vehicles etc, but i think they lose their value on static units.
I think havocs would be better off with Heavy bolters or missile launchers, using them as area denial units.
