So I sat down and combed over our fast attack choices, and after some thought, I decided I really don't like the Chaos Furies. For the same cost as a flesh hound, you get no furious charge or other abilities. You also have one less WS and I (meaning MEQs hit first against you on 3's).
Their only advantage is being "Jump Infantry", which isn't as useful for an army that deep strikes. I guess you could DS behind terrain so you couldn't be seen, but it still isn't really worth it, considering you could do everything better with a flesh hound which is actually faster because hounds can fleet and assault.
Personally, I wish GW had given Furies the ability that CSM lesser daemons have, they can assault into combat the turn they drop. However, Furies cannot come in with the first group on turn 1. This is because, as the fluff points out, Furies are the vultures of the warp. They're not going to show up unless the battle is already underway. I think this would have actually given furies a use in the CD lists, and been very fluffy. As they are, I see no reason to put them as a fast attack compared to our other choices.
Thoughts on possible tactics, disagreements with the above statements, etc?
I don't think you'll get an argument on that one. Furies are generally frowned upon.
From the Nightmares of Mortals, For the Greater Good of the Devourer of Worlds!
At least we still have rules for them, rather than dropping them all together..
What once was courage has now cursed in the wars we've made.
We are the sinners, before our graves.
really liked them in the old CSM codex. they rocked! now i have a pile of em that are just gonna sit there
If you no longer have any use for your furies then send them over to me
You could pick up a copy of the FB daemons book and play some small games with the daemons you have (I think they're the same models). In FB furies rock, so you would have a use for them
Furies used to be great. Now they aren't. I loved my Furies, and now they're useless.
It's a good job I have a WFB Chaos army too, otherwise they would be on Ebay by now.
Well, yes of course the Flesh Hounds of Khorne are better point-wise, but what about all the Daemons players that are trying a non-Khorne mono-god army, or just don't have any models for the Flesh Hounds, but plenty for the Furies?
And being Jump Infantry can come in handy in more situations. They could be deployed behind terrain, or behind Monstrous Creatures, and then jump over them and charge on their second turn. Also, something that even Flash Hounds would have trouble doing is to actually jump over enemy troops to charge at units behind. Sure, some might say that since they're deep-struck, it doesn't really matter if they can jump anywhere but really, if I wanted to charge the pesky units the opponent's keeping in the back, I much rather hiding and coming in jumping from the front than risking deepstriking in his own lines, then trying to survive a round of fire and assault then Maybe, after all this, finally charge the back units...
Sure they are not that good in combat but they could be a good tarpit unit, or maybe manage to actually do something good against low-count back units like... Imperial Guard Heavy Weapons teams, for example. After all, I sure wouldn't discount the element of surprise a jumping unit could have :)
That being said, I don't have furies myself, but thought about maybe getting some... so I'm interested on where this threads' heading (if it's going anywhere, that is... ;) )
