Well, Im finding my 1500 Chaos List a little short of Anti Tank, and have just got a shiny new box of Chaos Terminators. And I was wondering, should I give them Combi Meltas.
The way I see it:
5 Chaos Termies with plasma DS within 12" of a marine squad. Kill about 5
Thats roughly 70-80 points.
5 Chaos Termies with Melta DS within 12" of a tank, if theyre close (which with my biking icons, they will be), then thats a dead tank. 120-250 points.
Im building them now, fast replies appreciated.
However..can the plasma not do the same job as the meltaguns??
Meltaguns are technically more points effective but only if your deffo attacking the tanks with them.
Plasmaguns though mean that you can attack the infantry or the tanks. assuming you can get side or back armour.
But the meltaguns are usually going to be more accurate considering the termies will take maybe an enemy commander, causing instant death more often than plasma being St8. (instant kills marines, plasma doesn't) or a big monstorous creature or, as stated...a tank
For your purpose...go with the meltas..in general though it is a good discussion to bring up.

I've tried the Combi-Meltas over the Combi-Plasmas a few games and they do work if you're deepstriking off of an icon close to get those shots in. It can be a devastating effect to an enemy, or their vehicles. More research is required.

Well, the general consensus is that Plasma is best, however, in my list, which is:
HQ-Unknown mortal thing and a Greater Daemon
Troops-3 Squads of Chaos Marines, 2 have 2 plasma guns and Fist, one has 2 meltas and fist, and a unit of lesser daemons.
Fast Attack-Bike Unit with Icon, champion, and 2 meltas
Heavy Support- 2 Vindicators
So, as you can see, my anti tank is the two melta squads, and the Vindicators if I get lucky. And maybe the Greater Daemon if he gets close enough.
So, in my predicament, are the Combi Meltas worth it? What do we think?
Personaly i like meltas more, but the most efective way for the termies are the combi-plasmas.It's just overall a better deal, if you face a Vehicle or some troops, you will always be prepeared. But don't let my words stop you, do whatever you like with the termies, there great for experimenting.
I woud say... take a chill pill. Don't be in such a hurry.
I myself am putting together my termies. I have ordered and recieved very small neodymium magnets to use in the arms and torsos, so I'll be able to switch arms as I see fit. It's great for tanks and Aspiring Champions and Lords too. Having 6 rhino chassis makes 3 possible preds with every imaginable sponson-configuration.
My Termie Lord will switch between his combi-melta + Daemon Sword and his dual Lightning claws. Extra arms and shoulder pads can be ordered from bitz-stores online.
Mine was a bit tougher to find, as I makes my termies from Forge Worlds Death Guard resin sets. But bitsandkits had extra resin Death Guard shoulderpads both for termies and Marines. My Death Guard army will be extremely customizable.

Well, I think I will probably take the Plasmas on the Termies, but give the Lord a Combi Melta =).
So, currently, the terminators are set out:
4 Chaos Terminators
3 Combi Weapons (Plasma)
The thing about deepstriking Terminators is that you can usually gun for the side/rear armor of a vehicle. Unless you see a lot of Land Raiders and Leman Russes, you're still better off with plasma.
"My tanks have names, my men have numbers." -Col. Edmund Grahvess, 23rd Kronecker Prison Guard
I use two 4 man squads of termis in my standard competitive build. They're armed with 3 combi-plasmas and a heavy flamer, along with a hidden fist (i.e., Karmoon Special). Out of the 20+ games with termis, not once have I failed to deep strike off an icon. Icon's are that consistent. Of course, it depends on your build's ability to get icons in enemy territory, in which case, targeting the side and rear of armor is rarely an issue. Additionally, consider that the combi-plasma should be double tapping into side or rear armor. Very effective indeed.
However, on the other side, combi-meltas are also a very solid choice. While you're losing adaptability, this isn't always a bad thing, especially if you're taking 5 or more termis. I've seen very good builds use a 5-6 termi squad with only one combi-melta, the rest combi-plasma. This just gives that one good tank busting shot, while preserving the unit's ability to adapt with plasma rounds.
