I am going to be starting a mostly if not all tsons lineup. So i want to discuss the different strategies for the cult squad. Things i want to talk about are size of the squad, rhino/no rhino, and what powers to give the ASorcerer.
My list is going to start at 1500 but then expand to 2000 and I want it to be almost as competitive as a mostly tsons list can be.
I don't particularly care about the sacred number of troops. So what size is the most effective for the points. I have never played with or against tsons so how survivable to shooting is a 7person + ASorc squad? How much help does the the 4++ provide (I know it depends on opposing army)? I have been thinking about bigger squads too because i feel the ASorc is a little expensive and that the basic Tson is pretty sweet.
Rhinos seem to add a lot of flexibility to a slow army for a relatively cheap pts cost.
Thinking about the ASorcs:
Doombolt is a cheap power that is great because it fits exactly with what the tson squad should be doing. Doling out huge amounts of AP3 shots.
Bolt of Change is expensive and I feel that they are maybe not the best squads to be shooting at tanks. But if they don't have bolt then the rest of your army has to be Anti-tank. (I am leaning towards the rest of my army being anti tank)
Winds of Chaos is a amazing power and if my army is in rhinos might be worth it. If i decide no rhinos i don't see how this power is helpful.
The other power im considering is Gift of Chaos. This is an intriguing choice for me. Since it does not count as shooting it can be cast twice in a turn. Even against SM's that two shots at 5+ to pop that powerfist. Against Eldar two shots at 4+ to pop that shadowseer. It is expensive but it could provide some CC power that would have to make the enemy notice. Chaos Spawns are not shabby. An average of 3 hits at str 5. Their weapon skill is low but not too low. And against a CTAN it provides a 33% (1/6 + 1/6 my statistics could very well be off right now) of instant death. Pretty impressive to me.
I am thinking of basing my army around a core of 3x7 Tsons + ASorc with Gift of Chaos? what do you all think of that? If I do this should i take 3 rhinos?
Would i be more competitive just saving the points and going with doombolt?
Anyways thanks for the help, I was thinking of having an HQ of DP wings, mot, and what powers? my heavy support would be anti tank focused but im not sure what to go with?
Lots of questions any answers would be helpful. I love theoretical discussion but if anyone has tangible experience with these squads i would love to hear that.
It seems like you have the basic grasp of how to put together your tsons squads and that you arent rushing to use the BoC power as its only available to MoT units. Id suggest using units of even numbers, 8 or 10 are good strong sizes. For the rhinos you need to consider the remainder of your force, what are you going for? Are you going to charge down the enemy or sit and wait for them? Shoot them at close range or one load of shooting and then go in with Daemon princes and such? If you are looking to move forwards Id suggest taking rhinos and using predators for AT. If you are going to be sitting back take a mix of havocs and oblits for your AT.
Id definately gear your HQ choices around assualt. This way they can get your Tsons out of combat when things get messy.
warp time is an HQ's best friend and combined with a ranged attack, your HQ can pop open warp time use a psychic shooting power and reroll his to hit and to wound rolls, the charges and and uses the same rerolls to really turn him into a hard hitting unit. I would recommend either a sorc or demon prince, not a chaos lord, while WS 6 is nice as are the demon weapons, i would rather have warptime as it is more effective than a non rerollable demon weapon. the prince has a good number of attacks and a good strength, the sorc can instagib, and if they change the rules for force weapons, you can use both warptime and the forceweapon in the same turn (currently you cannot). If you are going to get 2 hqs keep them cheap and with warptime + doombolt, if you are just getting one, tune him up with bolt of change and warptime for some vehicle/character hunting.
I would recommend maxing out on doombolt and wind of chaos psychic powers. Get a defiler and two preds (i would recomend using two with heavy bolters and a TL lascannon, or an autocannon/lascannon config to keep them cheap) and a defiler w/ autocannon and extra CC weapon to really put a dent in horde units.
i would also recomend rhinos for all your squads for all the obvious reasons.
