Hello, I wanted to hear everyones thoughts on Icons; Do you take them?, How many?, and where do you put them? I have been using four, but I debating whether or not that 100 pts could be spend elsewhere.
I use two, in my troops choices. If I take Plaguebearers they get them, if not it goes in the biggest squad. I put one in each deep striking contingent to make sure I always start with one.
I would say getting 1 per 500 points of your army is plenty.
I use 2 in my 1500 point Nurgle army. In my 1500 point Tzeentch force I don't use any as they all shoot and so try to deepstrike about 15" from opponents. I am thinking of putting one in this army to make deepstriking 3x3 flamers of Tzeentch more effective.
Icons should be placed ideally in units of 3+ bloodcrushers or 7+ plague bearers. Less good choices would be 10+ Bloodletters and 7+ Horrors (but horrors ususlly try to keep the range open). Placing icons on daemonettes or seekers isn't reccomended as these units are vulnerable and quite dangerous so move to the top of your opponents target priority list.
Another option is to put icons on heralds who then join large infantry units. If you have 2 of these infantry units (with the same mark as the herald) you can leave one unit if they get shot to bits and join another unit to get yourself a fresh set of meat shields.
Remember icons often have to survive until turn 3-5 for them to take effect so survivability is your main concern.

Speaking in terms of assault, you need to look at what you're trying to DS that you need an icon for.
If you're DSing most Slaaneshi units, you don't need an icon b/c even on a bad scatter, you usually charge 18"~24" the next turn and get to whatever you need to attack. Same goes for flesh hounds and flying units.
However, if you have BCs, BLs, or some other high assault unit that can't move fast, an icon can really help place them such that you are in a good position for a charge the following turn. A nice trick is to drop BLs directly behind PBs so they get a 4+ cover save (and the cover is damn hard to kill). Flamers and daemons with Breath of Chaos are another unit who greatly benefit from an icon due to their short range.
Four icons seems to be overkill as you have to put your units in two groups for the Daemonic assault and if you don't roll what you want to, those icons can be wasted. In 1500, I'd say two is a good maximum, and only if you have something that can carry it without dieing.
