First post in over a year, go me.
This weekend just gone I was visited by my 40k-mad cousin and so I spent an evening with him helping him build his Ultramarines, showing him how to use glue, how to use a modelling knife and all that. Then I taught him the basics of the game and my Black Legionaires thoroughly trounced him in two squad vs. squad games. Good to see me keeping them in a box for nearly two years hasn't affected their aim. Nor their attitude.
I am trying very, very hard right now not to get full-on bitten by the 40k again, but I feel that I at least should check up on what happened with Chaos recently.
So, I know theres a new Codex out. No more Legion-specific rules which is a little disappointing but being as my guys are all Black Legion theres no massive changes. I see daemons have been completely dropped save for Lesser Daemons. That I don't mind so much as I never used the warp-beasties, but the new models and the "instant assault troops" with "no instability" makes them a lot more appealing.
From browsing Blackhat's Chaos Tactica it seems that lots of units have lost things. Oo-err, someone at GW got whacky with the nerf-bat. My rank-and-file have all lost their Infiltrate ability, as have my Havocs with Tank Hunters. Have my Champions also lost those wonderful little upgrades like Daemonic Strength? And Obliterators! More points, lower toughness, less weapon choices? I assume then they no longer work as the soak-up-lots-of-damage-and-dish-it-back-out monsters they were?
I guess what I'm really asking, how damn much am I going to have to spend this time to make my Chaos army legal for the new rules?

You shouldn' t have to spend anything, except your time as the models havn' t changed very much. Probably just a little rearranging should do the trick. No doubt you have looked at the new 5th Editions rules- if you haven' t- make sure you have a few Troops Choices.

On a positive note, the basic chaos marine comes with a bolter, bolt pistol and hand weapon. Very good, expecally considering how important troops are in 5th edition
I'd agree with the rest, besides a few small instances I don't think the army has gotten worse as a whole only better, now that our marines are better in close combat than those self righteous knowitalls we can't lose!
anyone new and joining Chaos really likes the new codex... but there's a group of people who really liked the old codex that just can't get used to the new one.
Yeah, it's different enough to warrant buying the new codex and rules - check out the army lists to see what I mean.

Ah yes, I have read of this "Ubergrit" as its called. I always felt that Chaos had the best basic troops with their Marines - very customisable champions and a choice of veteran skills - and it appears they're even better now. My current army is very troop heavy (49 models I believe for 1500pts) with my only armor being two Rhinos and a Dreadnaught. Three squads of eight Marines with Noise Marines should give me plenty of Troops choices then.
Thanks for the comments, I'll look into it this summer. Like I said, I at least feel I should update my army to the new Codex but I do have a couple of military models to finish first. Like the T34/76 I started a year ago.
