I have recently bought 10 Possessed, and they are still unmade. I doubt that they’ll see much use in standard 40k games, though I might play them in a few friendlies for fun, and to get used to them. I do intend to use them in Apocalypse games, probably of 3,000 points or more.
I’ve had good success with very nasty close combat capable units in Apocalypse. However, my opponents will mainly be Imperial forces, of Imperial Guard Tank lists, Grey Knights, Sisters and Space Marines (of various Chapters). The problem with this lot, is they dish out a lot of shooting damage, which is often high Strength, and/or good AP (1-3). Occasionally I’ll play against Eldar, Tyranids or Necrons.
I definitely want to give my Possessed an Icon, but not Chaos Glory. Here’s my simplistic take on the other four Icons:
- Icon of Slaanesh: adds 2pts to each Possessed. Three of the Daemonkin powers directly improve their ability to damage their melee opponents. As Possessed are exclusively Assault troops, having a higher Initiative than most MEQs seems like a good idea.
- Icon of Khorne: adds 3pts to each Possessed. Again, Possessed are all about hitting people up close and personal, so an extra Attacks is always going to be useful, and directly add to the efficiently of the squad.
- Icon of Nurgle: adds 5pts to each Possessed. Because the Possessed need to be Assaulting, extra Toughness is going to help more Possessed actually survive long enough to charge, and then help again as their close combat opponents will require better dice rolls to wound them. My only issue with the Icon of Nurgle, is that it makes almost no difference to any weapons of S7+ and AP1-3. Imperials and MEQs have plenty of these weapons.
- Icon of Tzeentch: adds 4pts to each Possessed. Initially this Icon looks fairly pointless. Possessed already have an Invulnerable save, so why spend a lot of extra points to increase it by one. But as I’ve mentioned about, my opponents are likely to field a large amount of high Strength, low AP weapons, and power weapons too!. An increase of 4+ actually improves the chance of making their Invulnerable save by 50%, so this Icon does merit thinking about.
You can see my problem. From an Apocalypse point of view, all four Icons have good qualities; so I’d really appreciate some advice on this one, before I start modelling the unit.
the icon of nurgle seems to have the biggest amount of positives for me, the toughness helps them get INTO combat, and also win once they are in it, cos changing marines to 5+ to wound will make those power weapons slightly worse, and thats what they have to rely on after all.
If you have the points available, take the Tzeentch I say. If your looking for a more moderate fix, I would have to say Khorne over the Slaneesh. But the reason I say Tz is the following. Your going to face alot of high strength low ap weaponry and improving your toughness by to 5 will do absolutely nothing to save you from this. The possessed basic toughness is more then adequate to sustain you in nearly all combats so the extra is not really needed. The improved invulnerable save however is extremely helpful. I always run my terminators with Tz icon and people always question why and then when I save a ridiculous amount of invulnerables over their terminators they begin to see the method behind my madness. Giving your possessed that save makes them much more resilient in combat and especially out of it. When you get blasted with those template ap 3-1 weapons your going to be thankful you went with Tz. In combat it saves you as well because nearly every troop unit either has the option to take a power weapon and or rending abilities so that better invulnerable is a life saver.
40,000- 7,000 Points Chaos Space Marines=18 and 17
40,000- 2,500 Points Tau Empire=1 and 2
In normal games, give them IoK. Mass attacks work wonders with the additional strength of Possessed units, it helps them be effective to the last man and, on the way over, cover will be as good as IoT. In Apoc games, however, IoT is a better choice as the really big guns put in their appearances.
If you're worried about them getting shot up, try putting them in a Land Raider. I think 10 Possessed are a better choice than 5 Terminators anyway.

I tried a squad of possessed in a friendly game last month, gave them an IoN and rolled a 6 for power weapons creating a squad of 8 S5 T5 monsters with power weapons and 5+ inv dishing out a ton of attacks, it was a friendly game so we each tried new things, different squads etc and the possessed destroyed nearly everything in their path, only problem was the lack of a fist. Playing apocalypse though I'd say take the IoT and throw them right amongst the biggest pack of infantry you can find, just avoid tanks etc.
Thanks for the feedback chaps!
