hi i was wonderin weather to have a dread or a defiler in my army.
personally i thinkthe defiler is better, but what do you think?
that depends on the rest you've got
you can go really walker heavy with 3 defilers and 3 dreadnoughts, or if you already have 3 heavy support units, you can add a dread but no defiler. if both is of no siginficance, just pick what you like better. dread is cheaper and just as durable as the defiler (no possession though) it's also smaller and therefore easier to hide. defiler is more killy and will draw more fire.
i'd choose a dreadnought, cause the frenzy table is just plain cool. that makes for some really fun moments during games and you can always blame your dread for the loss.
I use both actually i use 2 defilers and a dread in 1500pts and the dread or defiler under 1000 depending on points, they both have uses, the defiler is large and intimidating to see so gets a lot of shooting at it but can generaly survive it where as the dread is smaller and is a little less predictable oh KEEP them well apart from each other as being shot by freinds can offend.
use em both, they make for a good tag-team!
if not, the defiler gets the edge over the dread.
for just a few points more you get:
A possible 6 s10 attacks on the charge.. with dread ccw's !
A Psychological terror on the battlefield.
(the shape of it draws agression, i think its a spider-phobia many people have)
A battlecannon, with legs! that can run headlong into the enemy lines! that wants to eat your soul! what else except boobs do ya need??
doesnt mangle your own troops.. hows that for logic, a daemon bound against its will inside a machine to be used whenever.. that doesnt stomp on you for it, when a dread does after a millenia?
Did i mention it's made of pure awesome-sauce ?
Dreads... dreads are ok, i guess, not made of win.. but have their place.
even if it does cost you some extra points now and then..
unless it decides to suicide like mine did last game..
-fire-frenzied and shot my lesser daemons.
got a maximum scatter with the plasmacannon and blew himself up
imagine that, a hardened millenia-old veteran of chaos.. accidentally shooting himself in the face.
Defiler. BattleCannon alone.
Something like 50% of opponents will be SM's, and 60-70% total will be MEQs or close (SM, Chaos SM, Necron, DH, WH, some Eldar, etc).
BattleCannon pie plates them, then does naughty things right through their army and up their collective behinds.
Combined with Lash it's almost naughty good. (We have one player around here who plays Eldar, and used every dirty rules/unit combo to win win win. He constantly complains about this, which makes me love it. How much? I bought a Defiler for my friend to use against him in a tournament. Mind you I don't mind dirty combos, I think they're fun and a GREAT strategic part of the game. I just don't like guys who use em, then complain when they have it used against em.)
Even against non-MEQs, it's a large template weapon with nasty high strength. Anyone who's faced an Ork horde army and seen how quickly they wipe most anything out, appreciates that. Anyone who's seen it shred light vehicles can appreciate it getting it's points back. Plus... the frikkin range... it can outshoot the board many times.
The CC, Daem Poss rule, and the fact it's 100% not going to spend a turn frying your own guys? Wow. They gave me cake AND icing.
Personally the Dread should have been about 5-10 pts cheaper in my book, or perhaps more importantly, fire frenzy shouldn't have fired twice if it was against your own guys (that way it would still suck, but wouldn't put so many tactical restrictions on how you deploy him as to make him almsot unusably risky... at least compared to his alternative).

Making Sisters of Battle into Women of Battle
Give a Rep Star if you like what someone said. Especially Me. I'm an unabashed Star whore. Blame my 2nd grade teacher and those stupid good behavior stickers. I'm just conditioned. I'm the Pavlov's Dog of stars.
You win with VP, NOT with kills

The "A Smart Player Will..." theory is a complete paradox. If we make an assumption that everything we do is outsmarted, then theoretically we can never win.
unless youre as crazy as the dread... crazy like a fox!!
i put my dread down where its needed and disregard the risks for the tactical advantage that comes with your statement..
The opponent usually assumes that youre sane and will try to minimise losses from the dread...
Sanity is for the weak, i say to that!
Especially since i run it with a plasmacannon and ML.
Has served me well so far, some losses have been had, but they have been outweighed by the gain in freedom regarding deployment.
2 dreds and 2 defilers, both with max CCW.
Awesome compliment to my thousand sons =)
Be nice to your enemies, it will make them madder!
I have both, I like the Dread sinc eit can use my favorite weapon, the plasma cannon. Defiler is good for fleet and Daemonic possesion. So for me its close with defiler slightly in the lead.
Only problem I have with the defiler is its just so damn big-difficult hiding something that size. Its not something I would base my game plan around due to the amount of fire it attracts. (ive only fielded 1 at a time-only own one). Other than that it wins over the dreadnought for me. Simply the dreadnought is too risky with it not always doing what you want need it to do. That being said im going to try a cc dreadnought thats only armed with a tl bolter and flamer-how much damage can that do?
