Topic is the content. Any advice on what to get first? I am thinking about
- a chaos general
- 2 boxes with EC marines
- a heavy support choice.
What do you think?
Hmm.. What you've mentioned so far is stuff every EC army needs to be legal, exept the undefined heavy support choice.
Slaanesh has good and cheap daemons, so I would get some daemonettes and daemonettes on steeds of slaanesh(those mounted daemonettes are just about the coolest models in the entire 40k range).
The standard EC squads can make either very good shooty anti infantry squads, or decent assault squads.
You should decide before you buy anything wether you want a close combat army, shooty army, or flexible army(what I would pick, it's the most fun). Your playing style decides what you equip your squads with(sonic blasters and stuff or bolt pistol and chainsword) and how many daemons you want.
For the heavy support choice you should get something to hunt tanks with, like a predator with three lascannons, or a landraider. But having one tank alone isn't any good, it will get all the enemy's anti tank weapons at it and die in turn 1 or 2. So if you get a tank, get two more or some rhinos, just so that some of them gets to live.
EC devastator squads are good at shooting everything, but they're not great against tanks.
Ave Dominus Nox!
I agree with most of what Absoluthor wrote. EC Havocs with blastmasters are very good especially if you give them Tank Hunter.
If you want to outfit your guys with sonic blasters and blastmasters (which I highly encourage) buy them as bits. Be sure to buy both arms. It is cheaper than buying 12+ boxes of EC.
The predator armed with a blastmaster and two sponson heavy bolters is a very good weapon and buy.
I outfit my havocs with 3x blastmasters, 1x lascannon, 1 Asp champ with sonic blaster, and a regular marine with sonic blaster. I give them tank hunter and they do very well even against horde armies.

if you don't have the codex laready get that first
Forget daemonettes on steeds. They aren't too usefull in games and cost $9.00 (U.S.) apiece. The box set of 10 daemonettes is worth it, however. I have 20 in my army and they never fail to make up their points.
I don't like the new EC marines box set. I converted regular marines that I had laying around with the $2 classic sonic weapons bits. I also found a lot of the classic noise marines in various shops in my area. They look better.
The new box set comes with an odd number of marines (instead of a multiple of 6), only two sonic weapons (I go with full squads of sonic blasters), and a useless sergeant. The sergeant would be good in a HTH squad, but the rest of the figures aren't HTH.
My EC army is a shooty one. I setup to shoot for 1-2 rounds, displace, then shoot some more. If I'm against a persistant hth opponent, I throw the daemonettes and lord at his best assault troops. If not, the daemonettes go after high value soft targets, like devastators, broadsides, etc...
If you want assault types, get a standard box of chaos sm's and convert them using the bits into possessed. Possessed are the best hth bang for your buck. Give them a chaos rhino and your set.
Some people swear on chaos terminators, but every time I field them they either get mobbed or shot up the first turn they're in the open.
Chaos dreadnoughts are awesome. I use mine as a heavy weapon magnet. My opponent spends 75% of his shooting trying to kill my dreadnought, while all my shooting goes to killing his troops.
So, I'd start off with a box of CSM, a box of daemonettes, and a dreadnought, if I were you.
Jack of all trades, master of none.
I only differ on a few points from Brother Zebadiah.
Chaos Dreadnaughts. I don't like them because I have bad luck with them. They either blow the crap out of my own guys or they frenzy when they shouldn't, run out into the open, and get blown away. I will use a defiler...if I can ever get the thing painted. My heavy vehicle of choice is the predator with blastmaster and heavy bolter sponsons.
I prefer to use chosen with a LT as my main assault unit. The chosen cost about the same as possessed, but I can give them power weapons. I am thinking about possessed with daemonic flight as my chosen's rhino keeps getting wasted on turn 1 or 2. It has the curse of The Glancing 6.
I like giving my marine squads a sgt with bolt pistol, ccw (power weapon if points allow), and doom siren. It gives them more punch once they get into hth. Against horde armies expect to get into hth.
