    Raptors - Still Useful?

    I just wanted to get the thoughts of the rest of you Chaos players out there, as to how useable our Raptors are with the new 5th Edition LOS rules. Now, I don't mean to say their useless, I am just beginning to think that (when coupled with a mech force using Rhinos - in infantry armies they are quite useful) they are losing some effectiveness.

    My local gaming shop has mostly terrain that can be shot through all the time, so trying to hide units is almost a joke, is this common?

    With CSM in a Rhino, who can carry Meltaguns themselves, etc. It seems that Raptors aren't as useful, and would be hiding behind Rhinos for cover anyway. Why not switch out for terminators who can surprise an enemy and arrive where you really need to help, in addition to their combi-weapon abilities.

    Lets get some thoughts on this!

    I stopped taking them just cause normal CSM in a rhino are so much better, cause they have bolters and can score. Yes we lose speed, but if anything is that fast then it's either my Daemon Princes or Obliterators that will get it.

    I generally have 7 attached with an IoK attached to my sorceror on disc. They usually go hunt some tanks and then go insane on the close combat. They are really fun, but you can't really place them near each other so a few guys always spill from the sides of impassable terrain etc which sucks if the enemy has template weps.

    I don't know how this would compare with berzerkers in a rhino, but they are the backbone of my army and complement the slow moving thousand sons.

    I dont see why a unit dedicated to close combat that moves 12" can be useful. Probablly you will hide them behind rhinos until your squad jumps out of a rhino and weakens up a unit and then your Raptors can go in and finnish off the squad then use them to jump away. Also you can always have some sort of lash lord in there leading the way pulling the enemy ever closer to you. For some they can be very useful and I think they are a cool looking model as well.

    Comparing a ten-man Raptor squad with a ten-man CSM squad with Rhino, the Raptors are:

    1. Not scoring
    2. Slightly more expensive
    3. No bolters
    4. Dangerous terrain tests on takeoff & landing
    5. Don't get a second unit (Rhino)

    but

    6. Don't need a transport for top speed
    7. Can take 2 special weapons with any model count
    8. Make better retinues for Lords/Sorcerors if they have flight

    My personal take: unless you like min/maxing special weapons, you use favorable terrain or your HQ needs a bodyguard that can keep up, troops are better than Raptors. Outflanking Chosen are generally better than Raptors, too, and a Havoc squad is just about as expensive without needing to get in close to the enemy. Raptors just don't cut it these days.

    What about loading up a small raptor squad (say 5 to 7 models) with an Icon of Chaos Glory, Champ, and 2 special weaps? It's a mobile deep-strike platform for termies / oblits / daemons and is good special weap support to boot.

    7 Raptors
    +2 meltagun
    +champ
    +power fist
    +IoCG
    ----------> 210

    10 CSM
    +2 meltagun
    +champ
    +powerfist
    +rhino
    ----------> 245

    I think both are pretty attractive units depending on your list and strategy. The raptor squad is definitely more tactical and the 10 man CSM/rhino more all-around useful.

    My friend uses 2 squads of 5 raptors with meltaguns. It's the cheapest mobile antytank that chaos can get and I have to say that they are very irritating.

    Im considering dropping my lord and raptors with jump packs for another 10 strong squad and some combi melta terminators.

    With troops being an ever more essential part of any winning list and Chaos marines being nothing less than rock hard its a good idea to stock up on them.

    *Looks at more chaos marines and another rhino for next purchases.*

    Yeah, I've stopped fielding raptors to any great extent. I did use a Raptor retinue with a Sorc w/ wings and Lash against Orcs to great success, but that was a highly immobile army.
