I have a been thinking about theoretical army tactics and one of my favorites for other armies and games has been the inclusion of the meat shield. A nice low point cost unit ready to die and block important units and squads for a few turns letting your more specialized units do the job they were meant to do. With the latest codex how ever I am hard pressed to find any one to really fit the bill. I have been thinking of using lesser daemons but am not sure as to whether or not the can act as a shield since they come in using deep striking rules.
Please let me know what you think
Well, our current codex pretty much leaves us with Lesser Daemons as our cheapest unit. I myself use a unit of 16 to plug holes in my lines when I need to be defensive, or as a bit of added pressure once I've hit the enemy lines.
Technically still not a meatshield, which you're really hard pressed to find in an elite army of any kind.

The thing about LDs is that if you want a meat shield then you only need six. Which comes in well under one hundred points. Since they have invulnerable saves you can throw them at things that deny saves without worrying. Want someone to charge that Vindi? Mince around those Honour Guard? LDs are your guys. Line 'em up in front of your troops and it's 4+ saves all round!
you could use a big squad of "ordinary" chaos spae marines. that would make for a very tough meatshield that can still dish it out. should work well with like 16+ csm hiding some powerful assault units. your enemy attacks them, they hold their ground, you counter-charge, enemy dies. adding an icon to this huge squad is also a quite cheap option. with 20 guys, you pay 30 points for 20 extra attacks in close combat with the icon of khorne.
No, lesser daemons are the way. Plus they can deep strike where you need them most.
5 chosen. Hear me out. String them in front of your lines, infiltrating. Preferably between 2 bits of cover. Now they either shoot the cheap as chosen, or your models with a 4+ cover save.
I give them a melta gun, to add to the uncertainty
I like lesser daemons, not in every list mind you.

The "A Smart Player Will..." theory is a complete paradox. If we make an assumption that everything we do is outsmarted, then theoretically we can never win.
My problem with chosen is that after the fact you still only have a five man sqaud for a fairly large amount of points. I am liking the idea of Lesser deamons. I am stil concerned that the LD's may not make it into the balle on time to really do anything effective since they do have to follow deep striking rules. I would also like to know what you think of having a unit of LD's in a 1000 oint kist. I mostly battle it up with Eldar and Necrons, but would like to make sound and flexable 1k list that will try to take the reigns in almost any situation.
2-3 Chaos Spawn could effectively cover a typical CSM unit I think.
