This post is entirely theoretical as I've not yet started actually buying figures, but looking ahead I've planned out 500, 1000 and 1500pt armies as I rebuild my figure collection.
One thing that caught my eye were Chaos Spawn. "Only" 40 points, and although they're not particularly tough, a squad of three would be a fairly useful meat shield, particularly when defending an objective.
Anyone else got thoughts/experiences of using spawn?
Pro: Cheap, Excellent models, many attacks at good strength, can move and charge up to 24", can be made by a psychic power.
Con: Mindless, armour save (Or lack of), more points per wound than chaos marines, have to be put in largest squads possible, expensive (£$£$), no guns, less than marines WS, counts as a KP even if made via Gift of Chaos.
Theres a basic summary.
Rork: In the dark future of the 41st millennium there is only friendship.
Fenrir: and magic.
Kaiser-: My Little Chaos Marine, Friendship is Heresy?
most people on the forums don’t think much of them mainly because of there inherent un predictability I don’t mind them I would say this provided its not a tournament I would play around with them
so I sposses there biggest pro is there ability to kill lots of stuff and there biggest con is there tendency to not
I am about to go to bed right now so I will finish this post by saying the fact that a unit is unpredictable can work in your favour but I would not use chaos spawn as part of a overall army strategy or you will lose more games as a result of bad luck
* "Cheap" has to be calculated at 120pts per slot in relation to our other FA Unit options.
(Factor-in being the only Fast Unit that isn't fast and has no ranged Attack option.)
* I suppose ymmv on whether Mr. Potato Head is an "excellent" model.
* Any number of Attacks at whatever Strength rely on getting into CC in the first place.
* Compulsory Movement, no matter the range, just makes Turbo Bikes and DSing JPs look better.Gift *is* very cool, and the only reason I'd pack Spawn.can be made by a psychic powerCite a ref, please? AFAIK, Gift affects models, not Units, and models don't count for KPs.counts as a KP even if made via Gift of ChaosDon't pay for Spawn. Free ones are pretty cool, though.a basic summary
Con: They come with only 2 per box
Pro: They come with only 2 per box
Gift of chaos is the only use I ever have for em. Only time the spawn ever find a way into the foam, other than for apoc games.
Yes, I did deep-strike your sister...
Necrons : W-8 D-3 L-7 (Sleeping in their TombFoam, waiting for a new codex)
Chaos Forces (CSM/CD): W-42 D-19 L-28
Apocalypse Games : W-4 D-0 L-1 (4 Titans, Brass Scorp, 3 Baneblades, 2 Bombers, 3 Fighters, and a Partrage in a Pear Tree)
Check the description of the Gift of Chaos power. I believe that is where it says that a Spawn made by GoC counts as a kill point.Cite a ref, please? AFAIK, Gift affects models, not Units, and models don't count for KPs.
Spawn are uncontrollable, never-scoring squishy thingies. I've yet to hear a good tactic involving their use. Give me a couple more troop models any day.

The description for GoC only says for victory points not KPs (as the codex was released before the 5th ED rulebook).
Though Id go with the opinion that models turned in to spawn from GoC wouldnt count as KPs (same as spore mines fired from a biovore shouldnt count-at least imo).
Anyway as that could open a whole differant can of worms back to the topic in hand.
Only reason Id use spawn is to potentially tie up a unit until something more killy can assault said unit. However as the spawn have random movement it probably only works in theory.
Currently play: 4000+ of Black Legion
I have 4 spawn... and the only reason I have them if for using Gift of Chaos. There are few things as gratifying as removing that annoying Vet Sarg with the PF and replacing him with a gribbly, slobbering Chaos Monster. The fact that I'm already in CC with the squad when it happens just makes it all the sweeter!

If you have a single unit spawning, that isn't part of a unit from deployment, it is a single kill point.
Just like a trukk and its cargo are 2 KPs, a IC and his squad are 2 KPs.
