Do these things work? It's something I have heard bandied about. So I am planning an army with 2 raiders, one full of plague marines, the other full of somethings and Khárn. Supported by rhinos, obliterators, lesser daemons and terminators.
But yeah, does land raider spam (well.... 2) work?
Basically, it can work in larger points games (I'd say over 2,000!), but in smaller ones it is too much of a points sink to be worth it in my opinion (In the aforementioned 2,000 point games, its almost 1/4 of your points, in two models).
I'd say take a single land raider in 1,500 if you like them, as they CAN be effective, however any more than that is just begging for those melta guns to put you nearly 500 points down by turn 2.

I recently used a LR in a 1000 pt game against an SM friend who had 5 Dreads w/ Multimeltas. By staying out of the 12" zone of death, my LR earned roughly double it's points back as well as ferrying a small unit of Berserkers who ended up clearing out my opponent's base.
I will probably be using mine much more often now.

yes, i like land raiders for the sheer volume of fire most oponents shoot at it trying to kill it. every las-cannon seems to want to fire at it. saving my rhino's and other low av units from a lot of punishment.
Take my words with a grain of salt, i am not the tactical genius i think i am!
It's a reasonable strategy for a 1500 game, although I doubt you'll be supporting them with much of anything at that level. The concept appeals to me on the grounds of redundancy; I hate to take only one of anything important. As long as you put troops instead of Terminators inside, go for it.
