I'm trying some games now with my old AL army. It was built with our 4th Codex so everything was going to infiltrate so it was pure infantry, no vehicles. That and vehicles don't really fit a sneaky stealthy army.
Anyway, I'm wondering what the experience has been with the changes in 5th and the new missions.
Here is the basics of my list.
Cheap lord with combi flamer and PW, icon
joins a 8 man unit of marines w/ powerfist, IoG
10 marines, PW, plasmagun, lascannon, IoG
10 marines, PF, x2 meltagun, IoG
x2 10 lessor demons (modeled as cultists)
So that's my troops. Lots of them but slow
8 havocs x4 heavy bolters
8 havocs x4 ML
I played one game so far in 5th Ed rules but it was kill points, so it wasn't a good test to see if lack of transports hurts me to bad. What's the consensus on this kind of list in the new edition of game?
I tend to play a mostly infantry based Chaos army, and it works pretty well. Havocs are the best part of it I think as once their armour is gone then its just a case of davancing almost unkillable plague marines. I think it works pretty well. Recently I played (as SM) against SM who had an all infantry list, and it was near impossible to kill all his troops.
My suggestions would be- plague marines are awesome- but CSM squads with MoN instead would beef up the numbers a bit, as would removing lesser daemons and replacing them with CSM to increase firepower abit.
I think its a cool list that would work well. Unfortuately kill points I think are 2 out of 6 missions, so it might be good to make larger squads?
SM: W/D/L 12/7/4 CSM: W/D/L 14/0/1
Guard: W/D/L 10/2/3 Orks: W/D/L 5/0/1
Nurlge Daemons W/D/L 4/1/0
if you play Death Guard you got it made, 2 DP with MoN/Wings, some 10 man squads of PM with PC/PF/2x special wep and some oblits and you got it made. Raptors with AC/PF or LC with 2x special weps to compliment Ac loadout work well too.
heck with PM you can even max out the squads to 20 man and not have to worry about loosing many models as you footslog across that table.

Alright I'll have to try an objective game this weekend, and see how it holds up. I actually considered making all the icons of Nurgle, to give them the toughness boost for survivability. It would kind of fit with the army too, because I went with the hole AL hydra theme through out the army. But doing that would cut a few points off and I'd have to shave something off somewhere.
the only problem with IoN is that you are paying a pile of points for the extra toughness of the Plague Marines but none of the other benefits they get.
perhaps go with IoCG so your guys have better leadership and some chosen that can infiltrate. 4 stealthy special weaps could put a big hurt on your opponent.

yeah plague marrines are the way to go, and have you thought about uprading some havocs to lascannons, for a bit more anti tank, and im not sure if i added it up right, but i believe your points were at 1590, probably my poor math. oh i noticed you didnt seem too happy about the speed, you thought about fielding some raptors?
Well they do have Icon of Chaos Glory now. Only unit that doesn't have an icon is the unit the Lord joins, but he is Ld 10, and he has a person icon for summoning.
The list I posted above is my 1500 pt version. For 1750, I'm considering taking some DA veteran models, and painting them up in traditional DA colors, and the urban basing them I've done for the army. The idea will be they are chosen, that have "infiltrated" the enemy lines posing as actual DA. This totaly goes along with the AL fluff and tactics.
Then these marines suddenly turn around start firing on my opponent.
Another thought is get the new Dark Eldar Hydra model and play it as a greater demon.
I've never run a vehicle in my chaos army, and i have been undefeated with my chaos for 2 years. Yes, you can run inf only chaos.
I know not what weapons World War 3 will be fought with. All I know is that World War 4 will be fought with sticks and stones.
I play my old alpha legion under the new rules. A few things to consider:
1. Chosen are good as they get in close and allow you to deepstrike (if using icons) oblites and lesser daemons (cultists)
2. Go for two marines (troops on foot), both with a heavy weapon and upgraded for combat. This gives some flexability and 2 guarranteed starters in Dawn of War missions.
3. I made my lord with Mark of Slaanesh and Steed of Slaanesh (had him modelled with daemonic speed in the old rules), it's fast and deadly.
3. Sorcerer with lash really fits the theme of alpha legion; representing misinformation pulling enemy units out of position.
4. Obliterators are a solid choice

The "A Smart Player Will..." theory is a complete paradox. If we make an assumption that everything we do is outsmarted, then theoretically we can never win.
I run an all infantry CSM army once in a while i will take my land raider though, but for the most part, foot slogging it is not a bad idea. Especially if we have enough cover to move through. Havocs though, for them to be effective they need to be static most of the game.
If a Million Guardsmen die, that's a statistic. If one marine dies, that's a tragedy.
