So far as I can see, a chaos dread cost the same as a std marine dread, except it gets access to cooler weapons / powers. ie: Havoc Launcher / Blood Rage / Fire frenzy etc.

Are there any negatives for using a chaos dread that I don't know about?

If a dread is at the back of the board, and it has fire frenzy (rolled 6) and the closest model is chaos, does that mean it fires at the chaos models?

Fire frenzy makes it unpredictable, a third of the time it's going to do its own thing. That's why it costs the same amount of points as a SM dread.

While we do have a nice bunch of special equipment that's available, it can get expensive very, very quickly.

I agree with all that has been said. And dont forget. The chaos one counts as a heavy support choice while the imperial one is an elites.

....Inquisition Dreads (GK) are also Heavy Support (and more expensive than their imperial counter-parts&#33

So just to clarify: Your dread is equipped with a Plasma Cannon and it gets fire frenzy. Your troops are the closest models -> ie: They are toast under a template x 2.

Reason why I'm asking is I played a choas player that rolled only for blood rage on one dread (equipped with CC arms), and only for fire frenzy on another dread (equipped with havoc & plasma) Twice in 4 turns he managed to do this on both dreads, and when the dread with fire frenzy got it, he targeted my squad on the other end of the board!
It was an IW dread - does that make a diff?

firefrenzy work like this, the dread get's to fire 2 at the nearest enemy unit it can see, if no enemy units is within range or LoS than you have to target the nearest unit of your own.

no, the rules are the same for all chaos dreads
Can you explai a bit better on the situation as I think your friend made some errors with his dread

That and they can get incinerators. Plus, a dreadnought is more important to a GK army than in any other due to lack of heavy weapons in the list.

The heavy support choices govern it all. In a space marine army you could have three marine dreadnaughts and three predators, meaning a horrible amount of lascannon shots. Also, you can barely play any kind of tactical game with a CSM dreadnought, as if you hide it from enemy weapons, it will either fly out of cover on blood rage or shoot your own units. Also, CSM dreadnoughts do have a lot of upgrades, but bear in mind that all of these upgrades are horribly high in points cost.
