Can anyone think of a benefit for our termies/obliterators to have a larger base? It seems like it is all negatives to me..
Hard to deep strike.
Harder to move through tight areas without making difficult terrain rules.
Since everything is WYSIWYG their base doesn't count toward providing cover....so why the large base guys? Is it just for aesthetics?
You need the larger bases to play them legitimately, they are not intended as a benefit.
They are useful for the big chunky models however.
It's all about fluff.
In books, it is said that Terminator Armors are large and cumbersome, so by modeling the figure on a larger base, you get the same feeling gamewise.
CHAOS Undiv.: won 14/22 games EC: 4/7 WE: 6/9 DG: 10/15, TS: 3/7 Orks : 13/20 SM NL : 1/6 TAU: 14 of 24 IG: 3/7
And besides, they don't comfortably fit on a small base!
Got a "good" rumour from a GW staffer? Forget about it, LO'ers know more than any random GW shop staffer.
Voor alle nederlanders:
The Dutch Legion
More orksies to get into base contact with for CC!
Go Go Lightning claws and MoK!
Yes, I did deep-strike your sister...
Necrons : W-8 D-3 L-7 (Sleeping in their TombFoam, waiting for a new codex)
Chaos Forces (CSM/CD): W-42 D-19 L-28
Apocalypse Games : W-4 D-0 L-1 (4 Titans, Brass Scorp, 3 Baneblades, 2 Bombers, 3 Fighters, and a Partrage in a Pear Tree)
In all the rules I can find it simply states that you must use the base supplied with the model, the older termie/oblit models are supplied with smaller bases.
Are you saying that whenever the games workshop makes a change in their new models the change MUST be reflected in all the older models to be able to use them in tournament play?
I haven't played any "official" games workshop tournaments, did you play in an official tournament and get told or notice somebody getting told that they couldn't use the models because they were older?
GW's website doesn't say anything on the matter

Snarl, I think most people just assumed you were talking about the new terminator/obliterator models. If you are using the older ones, on the smaller bases, you have to specify that.
Rork: In the dark future of the 41st millennium there is only friendship.
Fenrir: and magic.
Kaiser-: My Little Chaos Marine, Friendship is Heresy?
And then you answered your own question.
Some players might consider it unsporting, while some might turn up with a row of cardboard ork dreads on 25mm bases.
So, the concensus is, use the bases which come with the models.
As mentioned earlier, the question of larger (40mm) bases for terminators/obliterators is a bit of a moot point as that's just what they come with now.
snarl - if you're confused contact the people organising the tournament with your specific situation.
Try not to look for arguments too eh? Generally people are trying to help when answering a question.
