I do believe that they must all be armed with the same weapons unless it states that a certain number of models may have something. . .

Up to 2 models in the squad may be armed with. . .
    Etcetera. ^_^

Well, I'm not too familiar with Chaos, but just do whatever the Codex says. The meanings in Codices are usually pretty clear. For example, in the entry for a Black Templars Squad in Codex: Armageddon, it says:

Initiates are armed with either Bolt Pistols and close combat weapons, or Bolters. All Initiates must be armed the same way. They cannot mix weaponry.
Clearly meaning that all the Templars in a squad must be armed with exactly the same stuff. On the other hand, in Codex: Tau, under the Fire Warriors entry:

Up to half the Fire Warriors in the team (round fractions down) may exchange their pulse rifle for a pulse carbine at no extra points cost.
So in a team of 12 Fire Warriors, 6 or less of them may carry Pulse carbines if you want them to.

    EDITED due to grammatical errors.

if your gonna give one an axe you have to give them all an axe, except for the aspiring champs they can be armed differently to the rest of the squad.

As far as I know you can mix and match the number of Beserkers armed with Chainaxes. Just because one has a Chainaxe it does not mean they all have to be armed with them.

There is no rule governing that you must give the entire unit Chainaxes, so yes some Beserkers in a unit may have Chainaxes, some can just keep their usual Close Combat Weapon.

The thing that throws me off a bit is that the weaponry upgrades are in a different area of the codex. But I believe you must give the entire unit the chain axe upgrade.
