Hey all, this is my first time posting here on LO. Anyway have been working on a 1000 point army and I'm the kind of guy who can never make up his mind. I would just like to know if making up your own war band and colors is frowned upon. Since i am not rich and i do not plan on having lots of different armies just one i can switch troops and what not out for when i need too. So i would like to create my own so i can just switch out cult troops at my convenience if i use them. This way i can have Berzerkers in my army and not have to be a world eater and then if i feel like it just take them out for say noise marines. I was thinking of having my army's main color be a bone white, which in fluff would be from the years of relentless fighting this warband has fixed and reinforced there armor with bones, from daemon and alein alike.
P.S if any of you have made your own warband/army up mind posting what it is?
A warm welcome to the mightiest of forums!
And a very nice choice in army, if I may say.
Are you kidding? Frowned upon? It's actively encouraged! Especially in these parts. Everyone likes creativity, and having your own legion/chapter/warband is the best way not to restrict yourself to silly fluff rules and annoying lore nazi types.
Be creative and go with the flow.... for example..
My army is called 'The Penetrators' and formed from 2 Grand Companies of the Alpha Legion.
Here are some pics:
I chose this scheme simply because I liked the colours.
Ssoo... go ahead and be creative

Quite the opposite, so long as you come up with decent background for them (Not like OMG THEY ARE SO COOL AND EVEN ABBADON FOLLOWS THEM!), then it is great. Personally I love seeing peoples home made warbands.
I have my own legion, however they are on the conveyor belt to be repainted (Dark grey rather than black armour, more highlights). I love using them, gives your battles a more personal theme. I also have other legions (World Eaters, Night Lords, Word Bearers at the moment), and just find playing them is not quite the same feeling.
As for what mine are? They are called the Warp Puppeteers, called so because they use manipluisation tactics often to their own gains. They have begun a crusade to summon a 'Daemonic Pantheon', releasing four extremely powerful daemons from their bindings (One of each God, using the Forgeworld Models and Rules. No.1 is on the work station as we speak). They have, through use of a charismatic Dark Apostle of the Word Bearers, convinced small warbands of numerous other legions to their cause.
See, something like that as a background is often smiled upon by other players.

creating your own legion is half the fun. if you are looking for examples of armies that borrow a little bit from everything but still stay true to one color and banner, then take a look in the Chaos Codex; especally the pictures of the Black Legion. THey kept the colors the same for all of the squads but kept the heads the colors of the cult troops.
May the "Nurgley Goodness" protect you!
Creating your own warband is great fun.I have my own warband ( that is becoming a legion ), they are called the 'Brotherhood of Sorrow'.They recruit some of the warriors of the other warbands or legions (sometimes enslave, if they realy need some).
The fun thing about custom warbands is not only the fluff or your game play, but your own paint scheme. And don't worry about cult troops, I painted my berzerkers or other cut troopers in my warbands colors. The ones who are dedicated enought to the warband can only wear the sacred colors and icons
thanks all that makes me feel a lot better. I going to get working on my war band right away. By the way if anyone else would like too post up the name of your own army/fluff and any colors that go with it...and heck if you got pics throw them up!
