I'm trying to decide which direction to go with my HQ unit at the moment. I eventually want to get a Daemon Prince, but I think I'm going to wait a bit on that (for the plastic one).
My army is currently composed of the contents of the old Battleforce (Rhino, 8 CSM, 10 Zerkers, 3 Bikes), a squad of 10 Noise Marines, and another rhino. I'm aiming for 1000 points and I'm trying to focus on a mech/assault theme. Kharn is tempting, but so is a normal Chaos Lord with close combat weapons. Putting the lord on a bike also sounds like kind of a fun idea.
well now im no expert or anything, but i too have been working on a 1000 point list for awhile now. Well ill go as far and say take the 8 csm and the two rhinos for starters. It would be great if you could get a 10 man squad of them, with a powerfist champ and either 2x melta's or plasma. Then your next choice is would you rather take 'zerkers or noise marines. Both have there ups and are strong units, im running my troops like this, 10x CSM with 2x meltaguns, a powerfist champ and the Icon of choas glory. My second troop is 8 'zerkers with a skull champ, he has a PF or a PW depending on what i go up agiasnt. Both have thier own rhino.
Well as far as HQ goes for a 1000 point list you want to keep him cheap on points. I'm taking a Daemon prince with wings and Mark of Khorn. Thats only 140 points in all so lets me have a decent HQ with more points for other things. Now what you could do is get a choas lord and give him lighting claws and stick him with the 'zerkers, but thats saying you take them over the noise.
An unmarked lord on a bike with a daemon weapon is a solid choice, for 160 points. Tough and fast with enough strength and attacks to bring down an entire squad by himself, but just to be safe, send him with the other bikers.
if your thinking about kharn, i say do it, i played him today and he was a machine, i played 3 games today and in that space he destroyed a rhino, the unit that came out of the rhino that attempted to assault him and his 1ksons bodyguards, a dreadnought, 2 vindicators (one blew itself up when targetting kharn, unlucky scatter) countless assortment of infantry, wiped out a 5 man terminator squad in one turn, then proceeded to get shot to hell...
i see no problem with kharn, he is a beast, the only problem with him is overkill
I also like a Lord with Deamon weapon and Wings. 150 points and pretty simple to use/cheap.
The bike lord with daemon weapon is a great idea too. If you can give him the Mark of Nurgle, you'll have a seriously nasty git on your hands.
If you're planning on upgrading, then you may want to consider a model which you can use in your upgraded army too!
A simple lord running with a squad might be used as an Aspiring Champion later or something.
When's the plastic Daemon Prince coming out?

Does the slow and purposeful cause many troubles? (I assume you use a rhino transport for him)
When you assault do you detach from the 1k sons?
If you detach, do you join them again next movement phase?
If you don't detach, does Kharn's grenades negate the slow and purposeful rule of counting as assaulting through difficult terrain?
Be nice to your enemies, it will make them madder!
i'm more of a sorceror man myself, have yet to feel the need for a standard lord.
(i do use lucius on occasion though)
i feel the utility is worth the sacrifice in raw hitting power.
If i'd go for a lord for your type of army, id probably take a khornate lord with blood feeder on a bike, just for the crazy killy..
more fun than a barrel of monkeys
lord, +bike, + MoK + Bloodfeeder + combimelta + icon if you use deepstrikers/daemons
185 points, potentially 16 attacks on the charge(or none)... gotta hurt.
If not, then i'd maybe take kharn just for the heck of it.
