this is my first post here on these forums, but i have been looking at them for a few months now.
I am recently getting into daemons in 40K (coming from marines) and was wondering if you could give me help with my list.
Currently i own:
6-Flesh Hounds (including Karanak)
1-Bloodthirster w/instrument and Blessing
1-herald on Juggernaut w/icon
1-Soul Grinder w/phlegm
1-Daemon Prince w/Ironhide, Nurgel, Flies, touch
What do you guys think? i am working on getting some chariots.
With regard the bloodletters, I'd seperate them into 4 squads of 5 instead of two squads of 10. This should increase your unit count so you can mess around with Daemonic Assault more. Plus, it protects the BL's a little bit - thier biggest weakness is being shot at. Since they lack the armor or toughness to just take it and keep on coming, and with only 20 of them, you're better off splitting them into 5 man units. This limits your opponent's targeting options and should run him out of available targets before he kills everything.
That said, they still need to be deployed together, and attack the same target. BLs are good CC'ers, but 5 won't win you the fight by themselves. Two squads of 5, on the other hand....
5 Bloodletters are laughably easy to waste, basically free KPs.
I'd say that list looks solid. I wouldn't bother with an Icon for your Herald, not a fan of icons in general. Give him Blessing and Might instead, or make him into a chariot if at all possible.
More Hounds could never hurt.
Thanks for the input. I am glad to hear you think my list is solid. The main reason for me running at least one icon is to try and keep the soul grinders from misshaping, since they do have quite a big haul.
I did want to ask you(==Me==), why i should run the strength upgrade on the herald? that only makes him strength 7 on the charge, correct? That doesn't seem like a huge difference to me for the points it cost, but i am new to daemons, so i want hear your wisdom .
Just wondering, when i go to increase the points of my list a little, what kind of Daemon prince should i run? Or should i stay away from them altogether? I am thinking of aiming for three soul grinders and be done with heavy support.
Also, if you guys want, i can post pictures of my army as well, i have it all painted except the second soul grinder.
Unholy Might is a handy upgrade because it's so cheap and you go from wounding marines on a 3+ to a 2+ all the time, it's a handy thing.
For expanding it, another unit of Troops would be nice. Plaguebearers are great for this thanks to their awesome resilience. Some speedy units would also be handy. More Hounds, some Fiends would make a nice army.
Princes vs. Grinders is a pick dependent on the rest of your army. Grinders have the high AV and are very nasty at range and in combat, while DPs are a lot more customizable but usually end up more expensive.
you could always consider getting some plague bearers with an icon.. i use 5 man squads as a beach-head.. they are so tough thry usually always survive..
also.. i've recently gone from 2x 10 bloodletter squads to a single 20 unit squad.. its very very effective in cc.. even if it is a fire magnet.. you don't loose so many to nuter thier killing ability up close and personal like
Thanks for the advice so far, it really helps. My daemon list grew some last week and i wanted some advice on how to incorporate it into my current standings. I received 20 horrors, 9 flamers and a greater daemon of Slaneesh (AKA Keeper of Secrets). i played a 1500pt game using my new units and i really like the Keeper, but the flamers and horrors were lacking for me. I ran the flamers in the 3 man suicide unit. I ran the horrors in a 11 man unit with the changeling and a 10 man unit with out, no very impressed with either of the new shooty units.
Just so you guys know, i have three of the flamers in box still along side a $15 fantasy model i am looking to trade in tomarrow, so i was wondering what you think i should get for my list? Tanks!
Horrors are a good supporting unit. I run 10 with bolt and the changeling. They each put out 3 S4 AP4 shots and have a 4+ invulnerable to protect them. Drop in, spread out to avoid template casualties, and go nuts on enemy infantry.
Flamers can be run as suicide units to great effect, BBQ-ing high priority targets like Terminators. They also have warpfire and can get bolt. 5 with bolt is expensive, but gives you a highly mobile reserve unit that can move quickly to do anything from bust a tank to roasting big nasties.
Keeper is great. Tag teaming with the BT it makes for a nasty backup. Sopoforic Musk and Pavane are the best upgrades for it. Run around, smack things, H&R away and hit something else. Horrors provide some good shooting and more anti-tank, Flamers support as needed.
Should i Deep strike the horrors in first, or my letters? Or should i mix it up?
I started out using horrors in 10 man squads but found them a little ineffective.. I have recently started to split them down to 5 man squads.
What I now use for deployment are 5x horrors with the changeling and 5x flamers with BoT.. I stick these up close and personal and then let rip.. Deepstriking the flamers means that usually at least one of them cannot use its template weapon.. hence BoT.. but the other 4 can usually lay down some 4+ wounding hurt on a sizeable unit.. against 5 man squads their leathal.
Sticking the horrors into smaller units gives more targets to your enemy, but with the 4+ save they can stick around.. I played Tau the other week and my opponent wasn't prepaired for the amount of firepower that I laid down on T1.. I am considering upping my horror count to 3 5x squads that could be deployed on T1.. the only problem with that is if you roll a 1-2 for deployment you get 0 firepower and your CC troops that would have come down from T2 on will be wide open for lots of long range punishment.
I always put 2 icons on the table on T1 just incase my PB's misshap. That hasn't happened yet. Using them as a beachhead for whats up and comming is usually a winner..
Then I send the CC specalists in.. Ironically I have gone the other way with them, as I have combined 2 10x Bloodletter squads into 1 20x with Skulltaker on a Juggernaught.. Thats 60 powerweapon attacks on the charge + skulltaker.. Now I haven't managed to get all of those attacks because you are going to loose a few.. but the unit is big enough to soak up a lot of damage and then still be able to obliterate pretty much anything once its been charged.. My other epiphany was to switch Daemonettes for Seekers.. They are just a little more expensive, but they have 5 attacks on the charge and they charge 12"... 10 seekers means 50, initiative 6 Rending attacks with a potential move of 24".. Outstanding
Hope that helps
