k im a newb what is the diff between the gods and the icons?
what are the advantages for each?
and why so many different HQ choices, which are the best for which tactics?
"Suffering Is Wisdom"
Right, you would probably be best off buying the codex. That will show you what all the different marks do, and what the HQs are like.
Basically, Nurgle models are tougher, Khorne get more attacks, Slaanesh are faster, and Tzeentch have an invunerable save. There are then different cult troops that are even more different (Nurgle Plague Marines are even harder to kill, Khorne Berzerkers are even better in CC, etc).
There are not THAT many HQ choices, there are 3, discluding special characters. Its just that each can have numerous different upgrades. As for the best, there are no clear 'Best', each of them work better in certain lists (Lash of Submission Princes, for example, are great in a template heavy list, but in other lists they are no better than other HQs.) If you told us your planned list, we could tell you which HQ would be best to take.
But, again, I say, buy the codex. It shall answer many of your questions.
Rork: In the dark future of the 41st millennium there is only friendship.
Fenrir: and magic.
Kaiser-: My Little Chaos Marine, Friendship is Heresy?
Yes, I did deep-strike your sister...
Necrons : W-8 D-3 L-7 (Sleeping in their TombFoam, waiting for a new codex)
Chaos Forces (CSM/CD): W-42 D-19 L-28
Apocalypse Games : W-4 D-0 L-1 (4 Titans, Brass Scorp, 3 Baneblades, 2 Bombers, 3 Fighters, and a Partrage in a Pear Tree)
An Icon may be carried by certain squads. It confers the mark of a specific chaos god to each squad member (i.e., icon of Khorne = +1 attack, icon of Nurgle = +1 toughness, etc...). Also, our lords, princes, and sorcerers can receive a mark of one of the gods, some restrictions provided. Note, these HQ options can not be given an icon, but only the mark. Why is this distinction relevant? Because an icon further operates as a summoning point, which prevents any summoned models, along with any models that deep strike, from scattering. See codex for further details.
Cult marines, while having the mark of their god, cannot take icons. In addition, they come with a whole slew of other advantages and limitations. Again, see codex for more details.
