Hey everyone, i am new to 40k and play chaos space marines. my friend plays the tau and is killing me. i have about 3500 points worth including:
20 chosen marines
1 terminator lord
1 sorcerer lord
1 land raider
what do i need to do to beat this guy, any help would be greatly appreciated. i love this game just not good at it yet.
Practise makes perfect, and aslong as you're having fun it doesn't matter too much about winning ^^

From my (very limited) experience against tau, i'd take mostly close combat units, cause the Tau shooting is exeptional and their CC sucks hard. Our CC is ery good and our shooting is mediocre at best, so try to play the game on your turns.
Take some deepstriking terminators, raptors and rhino csm squads to overpower them inclose range fights.
As Moschaboy said, Tau's CC is exceptionally bad. Those berzerkers will have plenty of fun tearing appart their units. Deepstriking termies near them is good too, as with combi plasmas they can take out broadsides and with the heavy flamer they can toast firewarriors - you probably want to take up the bikes to icon the termies down.
As tau can be numerous, both the vindicator and defiler are a good chice - but note that not even a land raider lasts too long against the likes of broadsides. Vehicle spam should help counter this.
Be nice to your enemies, it will make them madder!
Close combat is the bane of the fishpeople.
Stuff i'd take :
sorcerer + wings with lash or warptime+wind of chaos is nice.
(go battlesuit/character hunting)
Berzerkers in a rhino.
Outflanking chosen, they force him to deploy towards the center of the board, or suffer the consequences.
Defiler, blast some fishies into orbit, then run up and smack down those battlesuits.
Don't bother with the vindicator, he will be either out of range of it, or in CC with your guys.
Flamers, a couple of anti-tank units is pretty much what the doc ordered, our standard troops are hard enough to give him lots of grief, both in cc and shooting.
If you can give them some cover, noisemarines really punish the tau gunlines as well.
Don't get distracted by the masses of stuff happening, focus your fire, keep your stuff in cover, make sure to get your madmen into CC, aim to win CC on the opponents turn or they will be wiped from the shooting by standing out in the open.

I really appreciate you guys advice. I guess at this point rush the rhinos in full of berzerkers, use the rhinos as cover, deep strike the terminators, use the lascannons to take out those freakin railguns, and the battle cannon to try and take out the pathfinders.
Khorne is the god i chose, but no theme as far as a specific chapter goes.
Just a quick tip: You don't need berzerkers to defeat Tau in c.c.. Basic marines will do just fine.

Id suggest bikes with a powerfist champ and meltaguns. Use this unit to quickly disable MSM crisis teams and broadsides. With the fist, even though you strike last, each wound is a kill. Couple this with lash and you have a mean and relativly cheap unit.
Anyone thought of a Hellstrike list?
Oblits, termies and summoned daemons all deepstriking off icons of zooming CSMs and Bikes?
