So my best mate is one of those disgusting necron players. EWWWWWW necrons.
Anyhoo, me and him will be teaming up fairly often possibly even at tournaments.
Now my question is:
How do you team with necrons?
I play a slaanesh heavy army 1v1 and it is a universal list that caters for everything but doesn't tailor against anything in particular. It has a few small variations
1 x 8 letters
1 x 8 letters
1 x 7 PBs
1 x 7 PBs
KoS or BT
2 x herald of slaanesh on chariots, musk, might each.
4 x fiends
3 x screamers
5 x hounds + karanak
Soulgrinder , phlegm
Slaanesh/Nurgle DP with flight, iron hide. Aura + musk if slaanesh Clouds + noxious if nurgle.
Or another Grinder with phlegm.
Now we lost our first and only game to marine/guard.
His idea was for me to use him as cover, but it doesn't work because I am so much faster than he is.
What would you guys suggest?
Ok, I know nothing about chaos daemons, but I am thinking about buying some chaos space marines to work alongside my 3000pt necrons (We necron players arent gross or cheesey! Undead metal zombie skeleton dudes are kwl!) and I think after play testing some of my friends CSM models, I have become a pro at using them in conjunction with crons.
Crons work well at short range, but should NEVER get into combat with anything other than tau because they have low initiative. Its all well and good you getting in there first and smashing everything up in melee, but remember to leave him some units to pwn. Necrons can remove enitre units at a time with high numbers of shots.
Realy, we need to know what list your friend is feilding aswell... If he feilds a destroyer orientated list, let him soften up enemy units before you trash them. If he feilds a lith lugger list let him pie-plate the foes troops choices why you head off his stronger units.
I never thought id say this, but pariahs COULD be usefull here too. If you could use some of your more survivable units so ferry them over to the foes elites and HQs they might actualy get into combat with enough numbers to be effective, and when (on the imposiably rare occasion) pariahs are effective, Theyre KICK ASS!!!
If your opponent feilds a CC army, use scarabs to tie up his more fearsome units... it seems to obviuos to be effective, but you wait to see your opponents face when his khorne bezerkers cant even move untill turn 6
Post your friends list and I cna give you more help.
Necrons have the resilience and short-range anti-infantry firepower down, but they are lacking in anti-tank and combat.
Problem is, Daemons have trouble with tanks too. All an IG/SM mix has to do is go totally mech and steamroll you.
Now, to complement a Necron list, I suggest plenty of tank beaters like Fiends, BTs, DPs, Screamers, and Grinders. On top of that, combat units to kill off what the Necrons soften up.
What style list is he running? That will help a lot too.

I actually would screen his warriors with your PBs, and then keep the 'letters behind his warriors - cover save helps them, and it makes up for the fact that Necrons are utter garbage in CC.
It really depends on what his list is, but I'd probably take a 2nd grinder over a DP. Necrons don't really do the Template thing either, and it's amazingly handy for busting up tanks.
As a CD player you need to provide the charge protection for his otherwise fragile Necrons. It's also important to keep in mind that you can use your units to great effect in distracting and harassing your opponents while Necron buddy just keeps whacking at them. If he wants to try and stay with you have him run either a Flying circus or at least a VoD on a lord, so he can bring some units over to where you've softened some guys up. He should also try to bring a monolith as that can be a big help to both of you. As mentioned above Chaos daemons kill tanks a lot easier than Necrons. Tank busting should really be your department while he focuses on troops. Use some CC specialists to go after the enemy CC specialists, and the ones with threatening ranged weapons. Those would be my ideas, from someone who plays with/against Necrons a lot. The biggest problem is that both armies can struggle against tanks. That means you have to work together to figure out your plan for them.
Currently we've played no bigger than 1500 in which he fielded.
40 necron warriors
Lord + orb
I play a pretty decent tank busting list and could help him with it.
Problem is I win games just by being in combat during my opponents turn, thus not taking any shooting and making said vehicles useless against me.
Attacking vehicles leaves me vulnerable to shooting the next turn and this makes me a sad panda.
PBs in front of his rons is a good idea!
I love PBs. Played 3000 pt guard + daemons VS marine + orkz. It was VP kills and on the last turn a squad of 20 ork boyz + a powerklaw nob + powerklaw warboss charged my 5 man PB squd.
One PB died.
The remaining PB's struck back and killed 3 orkz thus WINNING combat.
20 boys = 60 attacks
Boss = 5 attacks
Nob = 4 attacks.
That's 69 attacks and 1 wound!
