A week ago, I was playing Combat Patrols with my Daemons vs. my friend's IG, and I was wondering, how the heck am I supposed to land my Bloodletters so that they can actually be useful and not get shot to pieces the first turn on a 3'x3' field? It seems pretty damn impossible.
well the table size should be 4x4, if you can find one it would help
but really you need to deep strike behind cover, be it terrain or another unit
Or use a big target to be a magnet for shooting like a DP
Cover, Plaguebearers, and so on. Bloodletters can't stand up to much shooting, so use something tougher or faster to draw fire away.

If I'm dropping BL's first turn I'll try to have either a squad or two of flamers with them (those guys draw fire like nobody's business after your opponent sees what they do), a GD/DP, or my personal favorite a largeish squad of Bloodcrushers (yum!). These will usually distract and survive well enough to keep my BL's safe to charge next turn.
or you can do that i do drop a good sized group of Horrors and kill half there troops this will scare them so much they will do all they can to kill them hehe.
The 400 point limit combined with the Vehicular Armor limit should play to your benefit as a demon player. Don't let him take ordinance, as even the patrol rules developer doesn't like that.
Taking bloodletters against guard is kind of like taking a hammer to an egg, a little overkill. Maybe you could mention what the guard player likes to bring to the table?
If he is your normal player, he will tend to organize his guard to take out your standard build, so I would alternate between:
5 plaguebearers w/ extra points for a unit champion just for fun. ( I like the model )
Drop the bearers first and let the amazing charge range of the Fiends help out later.
5 horrors w/ Changeling
Drop the horrors first and blast any interesting units away. If you get 1 Changeling effect, he will fear horrors in the future.
Mr ==Me== is absolutely right in my book... I like to think of it as Operation Meat Shield
DS the PB's in and get the Bloodleters as close behind as you dare.. the PB's can take a huge amount of punishment and provide a cover save to the bloodletters. Then let the bloodletters do what the do best.. i.e chop the enemy into tiny chunks.
I took an entire Howling Banshee unit with JanZar down this way.. was very funny
Current Army Status - Chaos - 15000 points, Orks (BadMoonz) - 3000 Points - Space Wolves - 4000 Points, Necrons - 2000 Points.
Against IG, I'd drop your bloodletters in favor of daemonettes, or any slaanesh unit for that matter. Because slaanesh can get to combat quickly. I forget who suggested it, but fiends are indeed FAST! Drop in cover and you should be good, if not possible, PB screen works too. Also guard hate template weapons (he should be close order drill) so breath heralds of nurgle arn't a bad buy. A thought for ya.
