Greetings all. I've been playing chaos now for about 2-3 months, and at first I did well. Lately, my losing streak has taken a turn for the worse. I think I need to get back to the basics and get some advice on how to make a well-rounded army. My typical opponets are: Eldar (w/eldrad&yuriel with lot-o-wraith), DE (w/raiders,sergents with power weapons and drugs, and arcons with incubi ret), IG (w/ Hvy lascannons and armor), and Orks (w/lots of boys/nobs in trukks/battlewagons or lots of nob bikers). I willing to try about anything, and have access to most models or can proxy them in friendly games with friends. Thanks to all posters.
Might I recommend my emporers children list. It's floating around in the army list section. If you don't like it I'll be back when I have my codex in front of me, and will hopefully be awake.
Well, without knowing exactly what you have or preffer, I'd say start with a core of just a couple squads of CSM and a unit of Oblits. Those are very versatile, solid core troops and firepower. You have a wide range of opponents, but those units can serve well against all of them.
After that, start picking out some things you really like. Decide if you want to go for lots of tanks or none at all. Then go through your list and make sure you have at least 2 ways to deal with each type of army. Elf-Zilla? Powerfists and S8+ ranged attacks or plasma galore are good options. Mech DE? Need a solid body count and some solid long-range shooting to start popping raiders, maybe some deepstrike or outflank to hit the ravagers. IG or ork hordes? High volume of fire or lots of CC attacks and a way to get them stuck in, berzerkers and noise marines both come to mind.
Whatever you chose, just make sure you have a Plan B, and maybe a Plan C. For example: If the heavy support gets pasted, do you have some meltaguns, meltabombs, or power fists in the troops to tank-bust in a pinch?
