I am real new to tabletop gaming and 40k and have recently started a CSM army (and by that I mean I currently have 6 CSM troops) . So anyway, could a few of you, if you'd like, list a few units I should pick up right away just so I can begin playing?
I really want to play WSIWYG, I think that is one of the things most appealing to me about this game; that you can actually do that and be successful.
I was going to get:
4 more marines (for 10 man squad)
1 x 1 Terminator lord 2 (HQ requirement) (Though I really like the Kharn and Lucius units)
1 x 12 Khorne berserker squad (For my other 10 man troop requirement)(there may be special restrictions on this?)
I mean obviously I want vehicles and stuff too eventually but I need to start playing, so I was going to get my 2 x 10 troops and a HQ unit requirement filled and play some wuss games to get a hang of the game itself. Within the near to immediate near future I was going to add:
1x5 Terminator squad
1x5 Possessed marine squad
and maybe a rhino or something. I need to see more units in action and stuff to get familiar with how it all works. I was looking at getting a raptor squad for fast attack, and then looking into some champion units. I really want a terminator with Dual lightning claws. That's just amazingly awesome to me
Will I get - reps with the guys i play with for painting Khorne berserkers not in the standard Khornes legion or whatever colors (the colors Kharn the betrayer is) ? I guess as mentioned in another post I can just say they are chaos and its Legit awesome!
thanks for the help friends!!
Your definately going to want more troops, get atleast another 10 ontop of the one 10 man squad you have then an HQ choice. After that do what ever you like, I would also go for some more berzerkers, then go for your termies and plague marines etc.
You also want to consider getting rhinos for each troop choice you bring. They are dirt cheap and keeps your troops from walking across the board especially with Bezerkers.
Also leave the possessed at home if you are playing a competative game, cool models but they aren't any good in an competative game unless of course you are just playing for fun.
As mentioned before our basic troops are great at doing almost anything. So they are always a good choice.
a standard 9x Chaos Space Marines with 2 melta guns, mark of chaos glory + Aspiring Champ with a power fist and a rhino are a pretty solid unit.
Also plague marines with plasma weapons are good at taking objectives due to the feel no pain and they will usually get to rapid fire plasma if they are threatened. Are you saying that you are getting 2 HQs because it is required? If so this is not the case, you are not required to bring 1 HQ and really only want to consider 2 HQs in larger games.1 x 1 Terminator lord 2 (HQ requirement) (Though I really like the Kharn and Lucius units)
If you are looking at running a CC oriented army then Kharn is definately a solid choice, he gets a bunch of attacks and will fit nicely with your bezerkers.
If you are going with Terminators with lightning claws I would suggest getting a land raider to transport them in so they can assult from it. However if you do that you are looking at ALOT of points for that setup. Also from playing my friend who uses terminiators with this setup with his black templar I have noticed that they are a 1 hit wonder unit because they will assult out of the vehicle and decimate a squad in CC, then get shot to pieces. However, the models look really cool and with alot of other CC units running around like bezerkers you might avoid this problem.
For our terminators, personally i think they seem more effective to use the "Karmoon" pattern setup with
4x Terminators, 3 with combi plasma, 1 with heavy flamer and powerfist and deep strike them in. This will allow you to deliver a hard smack to a unit on the turn you arrive.
Also I would consider picking up some heavy support units like a predator, obliterator or havocs with missle launchers.

As for HQ's, no I was just going to have one, but they all look so cool and have different functions.
I looked at a Havoc squad today, I will probably get one of those eventually too. And yes, a squad of plague marines is in the plans after my visit to the shop today. It seems like a no brainer with the feel no pain deal.
I have so much to learn
Good advice from Sundevil. I'd second pretty much everything he said.. especially the part about leaving the Possessed out.
You might want to consider picking up the Chaos Battleforce.. it's got enough stuff in it to help you fill in the required force organization slots.
I'd suggest Berserkers in squads of 8-10.. you'll want to be able to fit them into a Rhino to get them to CC. Taking only 8-9 of them allows your HQ to ride with them as well, if he's not a Daemon Prince or wearing Terminator Armor. Take regular CSM in the configuration that Sundevil mentioned.. it's the gold standard.
Once you're up to two or three full troops choices, I'd suggest picking up some Obliterators, or a Predator, if you happen to like tanks.
Lastly, look for stuff on Ebay.. there is a lot of it and almost all of it costs less than what you'd pay at GW or your local gaming store.

Sundevil's advice is solid. My opinion is get Berzerkers, plague marines, and terminators. Definitely get some troop transports. I would not waste my money on possessed, I did and regret it (money could have been better used), unless you get the battleforce (it comes with a possessed squad) then I would just use the bits to make the marines more chaosy. The possessed have no ranged weapons so while there charging in they just get shredded by the opponent, you could also use the possessed as lesser daemons (as a distraction). Noise marines are solid with all assault weapons (nice). Raptors are nice as well but I dont use the chaos models I use the Assault Marine models from are corpse worshiping brothern. Chaos has very solid troop choices so you really cant go wrong (except the possessed).
Most of all Have Fun
There is no Emperor, false or otherwise.
I see! Well thanks one and all for the information on which direction I should go with my army! I am getting a bunch more troops for sure, the berserkers, probably a plague squad and some terminators.
I really wanted to use the up close and personal possessed, that style of play really appeals to me, but if its not viable, i guess Ill just paint them and look at them
A predator and vindicator are really solid heavy slots.
Also, as you said, the nurgles are good. There's two pretty solid configurations for nurgles.
Nurgles x5-7, melta or plasma x2. (Don't do 1 of each, pick both of one)
Nurgles x7-9, Champ with P. Fist, melta x2. An expensive squad, but they just NEVER die. Excluding being hit from a high str template.
Also, a demon prince of Slannesh. They're pretty awesome.
Nice! Thanks for the advice Fellas!
I bought two CSM bikes yesterday (unpainted on sprue) and 4 terminators, 6 more marines a Sorcerer lord, and 4 berserkers used. Got a good deal on them, and they are all currently primed on the porch drying!
I'm going to get a terminator champion for my squad and a squad of plague marines ASAP probably with a champion as mentioned above. Is Plasma the way to go?
If you plan on using Plasma at all Plagues are the squad to give them to. Most people will table plasma with them because FnP helps to minimize the Gets Hot rule. I would recommend the same.
