    Heavy bolters vs autocannons

Which would you prefer? Autocannon for harder hitting power? Or heavy bolter for more dakka. They bolt have the same AP so Im really torn between the two

If a Million Guardsmen die, that's a statistic. If one marine dies, that's a tragedy.

Without hesitation, I would take the autocannon. It can take out a rhino while the heavy bolter will really have a hard time.

Even against swarms the autocannon will be helpful because they usually something tough coming with the swarm (carnifex, hive tyrant, killer cans, avatar of khaine). The higher strength is always helpful.

    Against mechanized lists, definitely autos.

    Against swarms, preferably HB's.

Against footsloggin MEQ's, again I would go with HB's.

Autocannons are generally far more versatile, as only the absolute lightest of vehicles are vulnerable to the Heavy Bolter, and even against those the Autocannon is a more reliable weapon. Against a pure horde army, the Heavy Bolter is of course the way to go, but in a balanced list I would also suggest either Autocannons or a mixture of the two.

I'll go with autcannons as well. Adding on to what everyone else has said, they have longer range to boot.

How many of you use heavy weapons in your squads?
Not trying to thread-jack, just curious.
And now to erase your memory of this entire conversation.

If the tank busting in my army is already very solid, HB.
If my tank busting is somewhat limited, Auto.

I never use heavy weapons in my troop squads, I need the mobility far too much. I usually take one or two plasma guns instead. That said, my armies rely mostly on heavy weaponry. I generally use all 3 Heavy Support slots (Havocs, Predator, Defiler) and I used to run a dreadnought before the new codex, but now they're too dangerous.

As Dream Thief said here, I would almost never put heavy weapons into regular CSM squads. The ability to take two special weapons (something I wish I had as a Loyalist player) is too good to pass up for mobility reasons. Leave the heavy weapons in Havoc squads and the likes.
