Hi, I use to frequent these forums about a year ago before getting really sick and being in the hospital for a while and afterward I kinda lost interest in my 40k models and sold all of them or gave away what I couldn't sell (except for a group of 4 chaos raptors + 1 chaos raptor champ that I liked). Part of the reason I got rid of them was I had been working on models right before I got sick and every time I thought about modeling I felt like I was going to get sick again (had a really deadly stomach infection called Clostridium Difficile).
I'm thinking about getting back into the hobby but the price is really a big factor at the moment considering the recession and money being tight at the moment. I was looking at the renegade strike force and it seems like a really good deal (especially when you can find it much cheaper on ebay/etc , saw one for ~$200 with free shipping and I saw a few of the other strike force's for less).
What do you guys think of this boxed set? Aside from it being a great deal, do you think the unit selection is good? Will I more than likely need to buy other boxes to make a competitive army or is this pretty much a solid army out of the box?
I like heavy infantry armies with a nurgle touch to them but I also really like iron warriors and I've seen things pointing to mobile armor being much improved in 5th so maybe vehicles are the way to go? I like fluffy armies, but I also want to trounce my fellow players while showing off all the little fluff-based conversions, etc.
I also worry about bits. It seems like they have really slacked off on the bits they give out, mainly heavy weapons seem to be lacking and I was actually considering buying a loyalist marine tac squad box to get the heavy weapons I need.
Any input would be great, and any suggestions on possible army lists is much appreciated as well. I usually play about 1500ish but we can play anything from 1000-2000 depending on what kind of scenarios and number of players we have.

I think it's a great boxed set. Land Raiders are still used sparingly but other than that you get two squads with rides, Terminators and a Terminator lord which are really nice models and a good solid addition to a chaos force. (Many choose to convert combi-plasma for their terminators)
The Defiler and Vindicator are also nice. Many choose to get a second of their favourite of the two.
As for bits there are a few shops that sell bits. If you're from europe you could try Bitzbox or Bits and kits. Otherwise you might have to ask someone else or look up the store reviews here on LO.
Check out the army-list section for lists but generally people tend to use a lot of troops in rides with regulars, Plagues and berzerkers being the favourites. Approximately half the points being troops.
By far the most common competitive HQ choice are the dual lash princes but personally I think most choices are ok.
From there fill up with what you feel you need. A pair of predators for AT, raptors with icon, and meltas for mobile AT and a forward homing beacon for deepstriking terminators, chosen with craploads of speacial weapons. What ever suits your wicked pallet.
Thanks, you answered most of what I asked. I am familiar with bitzbox but I find they're out of quite a lot lately(and being American shipping is an issue) but I do find their prices to be the best aside from the random ebay lucky auction or trading with friends and they have better selections than most.
I still have strong concerns about the land raider (lot of points, big target painted on it, usefulness in question against some armies), vindicator (Expensive compared to pred, more options but again not a big part of my strategy, not good , not bad), and terminators(High cost, low unit count is a bad thing in my book except for a few units in an army). I was also on the fence about the chaos lord. I wanted to use a 2x lightning claw chaos lord with a jump-pack or wings(forget what they can have) and put them with the raptors for some CC fast attack goodness. However...
Dual Lash daemon prince sounds incredible , but thats even more money and maybe I could get along with the chaos lord for now? In vote war there is a CSM list that made it pretty far with that kind lord + raptors so I feel good about them.
So I'm potentially buying a kit that I will not use a land raider, vindi, and 5 terms (possibly even not using lord). That leaves me with the 20 troops, rhino, defiler, raptors, and possibly lord. Basically , I need to find out what 20troops/rhino/defiler/lord would cost separate, and I imagine it will be close to $200, or at least close enough to make it worth paying $200 to get the land raider/vindi/terms just to have them for versatility and padding if we play higher point battles.
Thanks for the info, if you have any more advice it is all appreciated.
For american consumers, I reccomend thewarstore.com and check their section called 'battlewagon bitz' to get extra pieces.
I too just acquired this box set to help me work on the undivided section of my chaos space marine army (2000+ points of Khornate guys and approximately 1500 of nurgle guys already... really need some basic troops though )
I'm not terribly enthused about the land raider, but it will work well enough.
Have you looked at the Battleforce box? OR if you dont think you'll use so many of the models in the strike force, I would just try to get the ones you would on Ebay for cheap.
(WH40K) Dark Eldar - (12,000pts) Sisters of Battle - (5000pts) Dark Angels -(3500pts) (WHFB) Dark Elves - (10,000pts) Beastmen - (5000pts) Empire - (3000pts) Wood Elves - (1500pts)
Sorry to hear about your illness, I understand the association of illness to a certain activity and how it makes people wary of it, far too well, even if they are completely unrelated.
When I got serious about the game, I didn't to build anything, I purchase two of the old Battleforce boxes back then, that were 150 bucks a piece and a great deal after getting 20% off at Warstore. They had 3 Bikers, 14 CSM, 8 Khornates, a Rhino, and a Defiler. I convert the Rhinos to Preds later on. Bikers and Preds were good in 4th ed and 4th ed codex, no so much now, IMO. But it was a 215 value for 120 bucks. Not bad at all. Now, GW rapes in the butt for every dollar or makes you spend much more to get that good value like the Renegade Force, with is great, as it is 340 USD of stuff for (20% off) 190USD. Yeah Black Reach is cool, but its also semi-low quality figures with little to no conversion ability. If I ever get a steady source of income, the Renegade would probably me next and FINAL purchase from GW, assume that deal is still around.
Proud to say I've not purchase anything from GW in 3 months now, and have purchased/traded for only second hand models now.
